Kevin Scott Richardson, born on October 3, 1972, was 21 when he joined the Backstreet Boys (1993). He became big brother to four guys: Howie, his cousin Brian, AJ (who was still in high school, and Nick (still in junior high). This was a change from his prior status as the youngest of two brothers (Jerald Jr. and Tim). He shows leadership skills when he acts as the group's father, a position often mocked by the younger Boys, especially Brian, AJ and Nick. If he had one fault, it would be that he's a perfectionist.

A shy boy before he started school, his kindergarten year brought him the "Standing in the Corner" award from the trouble he's caused, but he still likes to keep to himself, especially when he meets someone new. He has developed a love of reading, which is good, considering that the long rides on the tour bus can be boring without something to do. In school, other interests began to appear: Little League, football, horseback riding, music - including church music and instrumental music, drama, and girls. After he got out of high school, he was engaged to a girl named Beth, but broke their engagement after he moved to Florida and found a long distance relationship hard to handle.

The move to Florida first was with a friend, Trey, because they were looking for something to do with their lives and thought that Florida would have the answer. Kevin worked in Disney World, but in 1991 went back home to Kentucky, where his father, Jerald Sr., was suffering from colon cancer. 10 months after he was diagnosed, he died; this event affected Kevin greatly, he dedicated the first BSB album to him. After this, Kevin went back to Orlando and Disney, where he worked as Aladdin. In 1993, he heard about a singing group that was looking for two members to replace two others who had quit. He auditioned and was in the group…then he called his cousin back in Kentucky, who auditioned and was in…and the Backstreet Boys were born.

He was given a keyboard from his parents when he was 14 and accompanied Nick (who plays drums) on 10,000 Promises and later Quit Playin' Games (when all the Boys took over parts of the band). He also developed a love for acting and performances of Bye Bye Birdie and Barefoot in the Park first got his strong voice recognized, and he often performed with Brian at family reunions. He also began singing covers on Elton John, Prince, Billy Joel, and the Eagles' songs at restraunts, which really made him want to perfect his voice and become a singer.

Proving the assumptions wrong, Kevin (not Brian) became the first member of the group to be married, wedding Kristen on June 17, 2000 (and she can be seen in the episode of "LOST" entitled "Confidence Man" – the first Sawyer-centric episode of Season 1 – as the woman having an affair with Saywer (Josh Halloway)). During the Boys' hiatus, Kevin has continued pursing his love for the environment, attending various fundraising events that support his cause.
