This rant covers the Best of Cactus Jack in ECW dvd, some of the coolest promos and material of the mid 90's. Joey Styles opens the disc by reminding us all of that fact that Cactus was hardcore before hardcore was mainstream.

First up is Cactus Jack vs. Sabu from June of 94 at the first Hostile City Showdown. Sabu takes Cactus down with a series of enziguris and a leaping leg lariat. They take it to floor and Sabu plasters Cactus with a chair several times on his injured shoulder. Paul E. sits Cactus down in a chair on the floor and Sabu topes onto him from inside the ring. Sabu springboards off a chair onto Cactus in the corner, but takes an elbow in the face on his second attempt. The Cactus Clothesline™ takes Sabu over the top. Cactus drops the elbow off the apron onto Sabu on the floor. Cactus unfolds the chair across the length of his arm and clotheslines Sabu with it. Neat spot. Cactus goes to the top and attempts a sommersault senton (huh?!) but misses. Sabu drops some legdrops and goes up top for the moonsault but Cactus catches him in a belly-to-back, Sabu shifts however and lands on top afterall. Sabu slide out of a suplex, go behind, it gets reversed, and Sabu dives out through the ropes. Cactus leaps over the guardrail but Sabu no-sells it and sets up a table. Sabu springs off the guardrail and legdrops Cactus through the table. Sabu gets a nearfall back in the ring. Sabu charges but gets hotshotted onto the rail. 911 sets Cactus on a table in the second row and Sabu Asai moonsaults onto him. Cactus charges Sabu in the corner but gets nailed with the phone from Paul E. Sabu falls on top for the three count. Call it **1/2. A big brawl breaks out with Cactus, 911, Mr. Hughes, Shane Douglas and the Bruise Brothers that ends with Sabu and Cactus both laid out.

Afterwards we see the infamous promo where Cactus spits on his WCW Tag Team Title belt and proclaims that he is sick and tired of being a family entertainer. Paul E. retorts and cuts an incredible promo describing his obsession with the demise of Cactus Jack and CNN Center.

We brush quickly over the first Cactus Jack vs. Terry Funk match, both men getting attacked by the Public Enemy and the famous chair-throwing incident that occurred right after it. Then we go to August of 94 where Mikey Whipwreck filled in for Funk and he and Cactus defeated the Public Enemy to win the Tag Team Titles. Cactus cuts a cool promo talking about everyone from Abdullah to Zbyszko have left their mark (i.e. missing ears, missing teeth, scars, etc.) on the face of Cactus Jack and challenges Public Enemy to do the same.

Cactus literally drags Mikey to the ring to answer TPE's challenge but eventually Mikey has a change of heart and goes to the ring willingly. They brawl around the arena for a few minutes with TPE dominating until Mikey makes the save with a chair.

We cut to the closing minutes of their Tag Title rematch where Rocco Rock places Mikey on two stacked tables and is about to dive off the stage onto him until Sabu comes out, giving Mikey time to move out of the way, and Sabu tosses Rocco off the stage through the tables. Cactus dives off the top stage onto Rock with an elbowdrop through a table. Back in the ring, Grunge comes off the top rope and clotheslines Mikey with a baseball bat to get the pin and regain the belts.

Mikey gets injured at the hands of the Public Enemy so Kevin Sullivan replaces him and teams with Jack at the next ECW Arena show. Mikey vows to kick Sullivan's ass if he turns on Cactus. All four bash each other with various unique objects and they lay out Rock and Grunge until Sullivan does indeed turn on Cactus. As promised, Mikey hits the ring and goes after Sullivan, but it is three against two. Jack cuts a post-match promo where he states that the physical pain inflicted by Sullivan was worth it to him because Mikey proved he was as good as his word.

Cactus cuts a sweet promo explaining that he is not mad at Sullivan for beating on him, nor is he mad at Sullivan for costing Cactus his WCW job, he is mad at Sullivan because Kevin never let him in on the plans Sullivan made to attack Hulk Hogan. Woman interrupts and takes up for her then-husband Sullivan, Sandman interjects and the two have their first meeting as a result. Cactus beats the living hell out of Sandman before finally getting the pin after the elbowdrop off the apron. As a result of the beating from Cactus, Sandman was barred from competing in their rematch, so Woman brings in former ECW jobber D.C. Drake as his replacement. Cactus beats him easily but Sandman attacks. Cactus eventually tosses Sandman into a huge box covered with a black cloth at ringside. He emerges from the box covered in the cloth but eventually removes it to reveal Terry Funk! The crowd goes apeshit. This would be the now-legendary "Funk in a box" angle. Sandman and Funk, dressed identically, beat the piss out of Cactus and everyone else as well until "The Franchise" Shane Douglas makes the save. The two cut an awesome promo where Cactus swears revenge. We see the closing moments of the Douglas/Cactus vs Funk/Sandman tag match where Funk piledrives Cactus on a flaming branding iron and gets the pin. Cactus does a promo to hype the resulting singles match between he and Funk in April of 95, which is shown in full.

They start on the stage with Funk bludgening Cactus with chairs, tables and the like. Cactus dives onto Funk going for the elbow, but Funk moves and Cactus goes through the table. Funk continues to pound on Jack but he gets some offense in by throwing a table at him and then hitting a baseball slide. Funk throws him off the apron to the floor, ala the Flair-off-the-top-rope bump, in a sick spot. Cactus decks Funk with a garbage can so Funk responds by busting a beer bottle over Jack's head. Funk slices Jack's arm open with a shard of glass from the bottle and then moves to Jack's chest and forehead. Mikey Whipwreck and several others rush the ring to try and save Cactus, but Funk attacks all of them as well. Funk attempts a spinning toehold but gets countered with a small package for two. Sandman runs in but canes Funk by accident. Cactus DDT's Funk on a chair and gets the pin. On the brawl scale, ***. Sandman destroys Cactus after the match and Funk blows fire at him.

Cactus and Shane Douglas have a falling out over who deserves the next World Title shot at the Sandman, and each man subsequently costs the other their respective title shots. Cactus goes into their rematch with barbed wire wrapped around his forearm, but Douglas swore that in his last act before leaving ECW for the WWF, he would cost Cactus the title and he does by nailing Cactus with the cane, leading to Sandman retaining the belt. Cactus takes on Sandman in a non-title barbed wire match.

Cactus tosses Sandman all over the ring and ringside early on, but Sandman eventually takes Cactus down and then, despite being wrapped in barbed wire, lights one up in the middle of the ring. Cactus catches Sandman off-guard and pins him after a DDT. Eh, match was not much of anything. *1/2

We then go to the ECW Arena where Tommy Dreamer, Cactus Jack and the Pitbulls take on Raven, Stevie Richards, and the original Dudley Brothers (Dudley Dudley and Big Dick). Dreamer piledrives Raven on a chair but Cactus Jack turns heel on Dreamer, double-arm DDT's him and Raven gets the pin. Cactus explains his heel turn and goes "anti-hardcore" in a post-match promo. Here is where the disc really picks up.

We review the "anti-hardcore" promos next. If you've never seen these, no transcript or description here can do them justice. These are the promos that are transcribed in Foley's first book and are some of the best ever cut by anyone. This is tremendous and must-see stuff. Cactus attempts to convince Dreamer that hardcore is not the way and cuts the most incredible series of promos ever.

We cut to the ECW Arena where Dreamer goes after Cactus and Raven, but gets double-teamed and beat down. Dreamer comes back out later in the night with a cell phone and announces that Terry Funk is on the other end of the line and would watch his back next time.

This leads to the 1995 November to Remember and Cactus Jack & Raven vs Terry Funk & Tommy Dreamer. Funk dominates both opponents early in the match and uses a shovel, trashcans, a shopping cart, stop signs, etc. Dreamer uses a VCR on Raven. Funk holds both men off with a dust pan but Raven eventually nails Funk with the VCR and a toilet seat. The heels clothesline Dreamer with a chain and Cactus stabs Funk repeatedly in the arm. Cactus removes his Dungeon of Doom shirt to reveal a shirt with Eric Bischoff's picture on the front and "Forgive me, Uncle Eric!" written on the back. Dreamer pulls the picture of Bischoff over Jack's face and nails him several times. Raven dives onto Dreamer on the floor and Raven covers Funk while Cactus counts the three count since the ref is down. Heel referee Bill Alfonzo comes out with Taz and they attack Funk as well. Dreamer confronts Taz and Raven attacks him. Fonzie and Taz leave as abruptly as they arrived. Dreamer hits a piledriver on Raven and Funk gets the pin. Just a bloody brawl, but pretty cool. On the brawl scale, call it ***1/2

We gloss over Cactus and Mikey's second Tag Title reign with a nice promo where Cactus tried to get Mikey into Raven's nest but Raven refuses and so Cactus gets in his face. The "Mr. Potato Head" promo follows where Cactus talks about taking Mikey with him to the WWF and how he wanted the two of them to wrestle the Smoking Gunns at Madison Square Garden. We cut to the closing moments of Cactus and Mikey losing the Tag Titles to the Eliminators where Mikey gets pinned following Total Elimination. Cactus turns on Mikey after the match.

As Cactus Jack was departing from ECW, he crossed paths with the returning Shane Douglas at the ECW Arena in February of '96. This match would serve as a template of sorts for a much more famous (not to mention profitable) PPV match Mankind would do with Rock three years later. Brian Hildebrand is the guest referee, the story being that all three broke in together at Dominic DeNucci's wrestling school. Douglas attacks at the bell and Cactus is wrestling in a suit, two years before "corporate" Dude Love and "corporate" Mankind. Cactus eventually loses the jacket, shirt and tie and is left in the "Forgive Me, Uncle Eric" shirt. The Franchise goes to work on Cactus outside the ring with a crutch and later suplexes him over the guardrail. Douglas comes off the top rope with a plancha to Cactus who is on the other side of the guardrail in a spot that's not typical of Douglas' style. Shane traps Jack's ankle in a chair and leaps off the top rope onto it (six months later, that exact spot was rehashed in the WWF by Steve Austin and Brian Pillman). Cactus gets the advance and drops some elbows across Shane's throat. Cactus responds to Douglas by going after HIS knee on the floor. Cactus forearms Douglas repeatedly and he falls out of the ring and over a ringside table. Cactus comes off the apron and drops an elbow across the table, which is on top of Douglas. Cactus hits a drop toehold onto a chair for two, followed by a piledriver. Brian Hildebrand steps in between both men as Cactus is beating on Douglas and passes Douglas a pair of handcuffs. He cracks Cactus in the head with them and then cuffs his hands behind his back. The Franchise grabs a chair and pastes Cactus with it four times before Cactus falls. On his knees, Cactus takes four more times and then demands Cactus give it up. Sound familiar? Cactus calls out first for Vince and then Mikey but gets two more chair shots for his troubles. Cactus charges and runs into another chairshot and then gets locked in a figure four. Mikey hits the ring with a chair of his own and absolutely KILLS Cactus with a wicked chairshot. Jack is out cold and his shoulders stay down for the three count. Hell of a match, ***1/2.

Cactus cuts a promo proclaiming Mikey a drunk, a pill abuser, and a drug addict, and lambasts him for not sharing. He talks about giving Mikey Leonard Cohen albums to enrich his mind, but he would listen only to Ozzy Ozbourne. He also gave Mikey money to buy food, but Mikey bought only Doritos. He is really bothered by the Doritos thing and yells at Mikey for ignoring his obvious eating disorder. He further ridicules Mikey as a barbituates abuser and a drunk, and embraces Raven, whom he says he loves and is not afraid to admit it. Cactus then reveals that Uncle Vince is the one who sent him on this mission with hopes of bringing Mikey with him to the WWF and even though Mikey is like a son to him, he intends to beat some sense into him because unlike a son there is no law to protect Whipwreck. Classic Cactus right here, folks. Mikey retorts "Doritos?! Eating disorder?! Huh?!"

We close out with the last appearance of Cactus Jack in ECW, at the ECW Arena naturally, facing Mikey Whipwreck. For people like me who are interested in useless trivial information, Cactus continued the ECW tradition of "passing the torch" the night before in New York when he put over a young up-and-comer named Chris Jericho. For people interested in even more obscure information than that, Jack's last indy opponent before heading to the WWF? Rob McBride. Mikey was dropped on his head by Taz on the New York show, so he's wearing a neckbrace which Cactus immediately goes after and eventually discards later in the match. Jack smashes Mikey repeatedly in and around the neck before Mikey fires back with some punches and dropkicks. Mikey takes Cactus to the floor by executing the Cactus Clothesline ™ on Cactus. Whipwreck then goes to work on the neck of Cactus by throwing him on the guardrail and hitting a Russian legsweep on the floor, followed by one on a chair in the ring. He goes up for a victory roll but gets casually tossed off onto a table at ringside, which does not break. Owwww! He then takes a belly-to-back suplex on said table, which STILL does not break. Cactus comes off the apron and drops the elbow across Mikey's chest and then takes that same guy's crutch and smashes Mikey with. The guy who always provided the crutch was a friend of sorts of Jack's who he wrote about in Have a Nice Day just in case you were wondering. They go over the guardrail and into the first few rows where Mikey eventually sommersault plancha onto him from the middle rope. Back in the ring, Cactus debuts the Mandible Claw and then spikes Mikey with a piledriver. Cactus goes for a back elbow off the apron but misses and hits the floor. Kind of a dumb move in hindsight. Mikey grabs a chair and cracks Cactus five times with it but only gets two. Mikey uses a Leonard Cohen album as a weapon (ha!) and delivers a few more chairshots before Jack rolls to the floor. Mikey suplexes Cactus on the floor beneath the stage then climbs up to the very top stage and dives off. Mikey drags Cactus towards the ring and dives off the top rope but eats a forearm across the face. Cactus gets hold of a chair and hits Mikey three times with it before piledriving Mikey on it and getting the pin. Quite a good little match there, but I can't in good conscious say it's better than Cactus/Douglas, so we'll call it roughly the same: ***1/2. Jack embraces Mikey after the match and then thanks the fans for their support, despite all the mean things he said about them. He puts over the ECW lockeroom as the only wrestling organization he's ever been in that consists of "a group of people who give a damn." He calls Stevie Richards and the Blue Meanie to the ring and they strut out of the building to end the disc.

Final analysis: Dude, it's CACTUS JACK!! Buy this now. For those of you without a DVD player, I hear that the VHS version is extended to include everything that is on the disc, so go get this now. It's outstanding. Don't let some of the low match ratings fool you: this is an extremely entertaining disc with some of the best promos ever.
