X-men vs. Street Fighter

Ash's Comments:

Okay, if you've read any of my other fighting game reviews, your probably wondering why give everything so high a score.... a simple answer... they're all so good! Although now I think Tobal 2 sucks, I was fooled by its graphics. Anyway, on with the review. Graphics: decent. The worst part about them is obviously the frames of animation, which is sometimes as low as 2-frames a move, although Ryu and Ken and other small characters animate very well. Other then that, the graphics are crisp and clean. The character designs, I kinda dont like though. I hate half of the SF characters, I dont like Rogue, or Storm ( no I'm not sexist ). Out of the 18 characters, only about 8 or 9 of them are cool, the rest suck. The backgrounds are normal also. Oh yeah, a small thing that I really like, is the little anime pictures that come up across the screen during supers. They are just so cool! Now onto the gameplay. First of all, I dont care about tag teaming; it was cool, but not enough to ruin the game as a lot of other reviewers say. Also there is practically no slow-down. It's almost identical to Marvel Super Heroes, except now there's team supers and super cancels, which actually add TONS to the gameplay. The combo system is awsome ( the best there is ), with a mix of air combos, ground combos, and super combos. Wicked awsome, combos that take MAJOR skill for the big ones. The only bad thing is that the super cancel combos take off practically nothing. It seems like they rushed that part a lot. And here comes the killer of the gameplay, kinda. The unbalanced characters. Juggernaught is CHEAT!!! mind you not cheap ( i hate that word ). Certain characters have HUGE advanages over others, for example, Wolverine takes away practically nothing, and his healing factor is now gone. Juggernaught takes away a lot and takes practically no damage from anything. Some characters cant combo at all ( and this game is 90% about combos ). Some just suck. Some are just cheat. It's pretty bad, but not enough to make the game not fun... most of the time. Just think of it as a challenge when you fight someone who is cheat. You'll probably be able to beat them with some skill. In the end, one of the better fighting games out there, with some low framage, and some unbalanced characters as it's bad points. I recommend this one.

I'm a huge fan of Street Fighter as you all know. If there is one thing that I like to see, it is innovation taking place with the Street Fighter series. The whole concept of X-men and Street Fighters being in the same game is a lot of fun. However, I have been spoiled by the arcade version. Unlike Ash, I was looking foward to a tag team mode and was VERY dissapointed that it was not in the playstation version. To me it sort of ruined the effect of having X-men and Street Fighters fight with team work. It ruined the whole feel of the concept. If you overlook what X-men vs Street Fighter could have been, then its not a bad game at all. The graphics are nice and the animation with some of the characters isn't bad when considering flops like X-men: Children of the Atom. I like the supercancel feature that was added, but this just doesn't make up for the tag-team. Playing this game only leaves me looking foward to something better happening when Marvel vs SF is released, and also gives me a major craving for SF Alpha 3 and EX 2. Think of Street Fighter vs X-men as an appetizer. Suprise. Ash likes a Street Fighter game more than me....
