Bloody Roar II

Opening Statements

Bloody Roar II makes an attempt to take into account what the first Bloody Roar was missing, and fix it up, making an ideal Bloody Roar game. With added ideas, and perfected old ones, it once again claws its way back on the fighting game scene.

Nightshadow's Comments

When I look at this game, my reaction isn't exactly what I think the creators of BR 2 would want to see. I just thought it was a nice looking sequel, with a few additives. I mean sure, a game is supposed to be similar to its prequel, especially if its a fighting game, but it lacked real innovation. The bottom line is that the first Bloody Roar was not that impressive, so making a sequel with almost all of the same elements is not a good idea. The best thing about this game is the character design. The character design is both innovative and ideal, but the game itself is the exact opposite. They added special combos that can be opperated in beast mode with the touch of one button. No challenging strings to enter, or anything of the sort.

Ash's Comments:

First of all, I have to say that Nightshadow sucks. He didn;t even attempt to look deeper into the fighting engine because he just wanted to hurry up and write a stinken review. Well sorry sack, but this game is actually really good with good graphics and deep gameplay. The graphics in this game are sweet, much better than the 1st one, but still a bit blocky when compared to Tekken 3; but it has a kicking frame rate (60fps) with no slowdown. The characters are all pretty smooth this time, with original characters such as Stun the Insect and the Chameleon guy. All there moves are motion captured too so they look really good. The backgrounds are fine, nothing much to say about that. If you dont know the basics of bloody roar, then here it is: each player picks a human that has a beast bar that slowly charges up with every hit. When its full, you press O and then boom you're a beast, so its kind of like double 9 characters you start off with. All I have to say is: Thank goodness they improved the overall engine in BR2 from the 1st game!! Wait... thats not all I have to say but anyway... In the 1st Bloody Roar when you were a human you were dead. The human couldnt do anything whereas the beast could juggle, 2-in-1 etc. In BR2 the human actually has skill, and you can play quite effectively with them. They have a lot of 2-in-1 "points" where on certain moves you can do it, so you have to practice and find out which ones. In beast mode there is more oppertunities. The combo system is great, unless Nightshadow says. Now they have various stun moves that allow you to continue a combo, while keeping good juggles intact. With practice I pulled off a 12 hitter... pretty decent. At least its not like the 255 hit combos in BR1. AND the combos take skill. In reguard to Nightshadows super combo statement: WRONG! He just sucks at the game so he had to put the super on one button. They are complex motions on the d-pad just like SF. Overall this is a good fighting game; one of the best for playstation, and a huge leap over its predecessor. I would recommend this to any fighting game fan. The only thing that may turn you off is the somewhat limited roster of characters, even though they are all unique and well designed. You may be used to Namco and Capcom which throw in 30+ characters (not that there is anything wrong with this).
