Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Opening Statements

2D is not dead, and this is proof of it. This game has addictive gameplay and many different twists that could keep you playing for hours. There is even a secret which doubles the length of the game. The graphics are pretty darn good for a 2D game, and the movement can throw down with the best. Let's not even mention how good the soundtrack is. This is a great Action/RPG that you are sure to enjoy.

Ash's Comments

As one of the first 2-D games out for the playstation, it was greatly anticipated, and for good reasons. This game is now one of the the better games out for the playstation...still! The game starts off as Richter, from the previous Castlevania, and you must fight Dracula to procede with the game. You play as Alucard, Dracula's son, through-out the remainder of the game. The game plays like the average Castlevania, except it has added RPG elements. This game could almost be classified as an RPG. You can gain levels by gaining experience, and you can aquire various items that can be equipped as well. The game takes place in a castle ( of course ), which is absolutely monstrous. Without the map feature, you would easily get lost, although since you'd probably be playing it for hours straight, you might get a feel for where things are. And after the first castle is beaten, and you kill the end boss with a certain item, then the game is doubled. You will immediately be transported to an upside-down version of the castle, with new enemies and all. Graphic wise, nothing special. The movement of your character is great, but the enemies are rather poorly animated. Some of the spells were a bit dissapointing in the way of special effects, but that was minor. But I did like the amount of HUGE bosses as well as large normal enemies. The music was awsome as well! You can listen to any track in the library, which is a nice feature. Overall, this game is awsome. Easily the best of it's series. With the success of this Castlevania, I wish they'd come out with Castlevania 64 for the playstation ( of course not 64-bit though ). I would definately recommend this game to anyone.

When I heard that Ash got this game, I was kind of skeptical about it, in fact I critisized it before I even played it. Well he sure shut me up when he let me borrow it, because this is the best 2-D game I have ever played, period. The game sets a gothic mood with the music and the dark dingy castle that you get to explore in order to complete your quest. You play as the son of Dracula, Alucard. You are out to vanquish your fater and end the hideous bloodline. The game also brings in two other characters, Maria and Richter Belmont. I will leave the task of finding out about them to you. The games graphics are superb. The only flaw that I could find was that some of the enemies' animation looked fragmented or choppy at times. However, this is a minor flaw. The games' controll is solid as a rock. You have a button for jump, left hand attack, and right hand attack. This is where the RPG elements come in. You can equip any weapon, armor, or item on either hand. You can also earn or purchase magic spells. Also, when you defeat an enemy, you get experience points (In true RPG tradition). When you get enough experience points. You will be enhance in a lot of ways. These are like your max amount of energy and magic will increase. Your strength and defense will also grow. The thing that makes this game really cool is that if you can beat the game in a certain way, you get a whole new castle to explore. This castle has all new enemies and bosses. If you beat this castle, you get ANOTHER bonus. You get a new character. This causes the replay value to shoot through the roof! All in all, this is just a great game that with all of the 32-bit modifications, stayed true to its roots. I highly recommend this one.
