SIMON BIRCH
This movie recently came out on video.. and it is one that I can highly recommend to anybody over twelve years old. Even Gary, who normally prefers to watch action movies, thought this one was a real gem.
I really don't want to tell you too much in case you haven't seen it yet.. but briefly, twelve year old Simon Birch, a dwarf, believes that God has a special plan for him. Simon's friend Joe, never knew his father. A tragic accident kills Joe's mother Rebecca, before she reveals the name of Joe's father. Simon helps Joe solve the mystery of his father and also becomes the hero that he knew he was destined to be.
The movie deviates significantly from John Irving's 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' which inspired this delightfully amusing and emotional tale.
The picture on the right shows (left to right) Ian Michael Smith who plays the title role, Ashley Judd as Rebecca Wentworth and Joseph Mazello as her son, Joe Wentworth. Jim Carrey narrates the story and appears at the end of the movie.
'SIMON BIRCH' contains all the hallmarks of an excellent movie.. a good story, creative and sensitive direction, good casting and outstanding performances in the lead roles.
