MacLachlin

(Ireland): MacLoughlin, 0Loghlen, O Maoilsheachlainn: Counties found in Donegal, Meath, Clare in Ireland.

MacLachlann (Scotland):

The most ancient of Scottish clans, descendants of the 5th century Irish O'Neills. Aedh, a grandson of the 11th century Irish King Flaithbertach , is said to have married a Scottish Princess, the heiress to the Kingdom of Cowal. The clan heartland of Strathlachlan, near Loch yne Argyll, where the chief still lives in Castle Lachlan, is beleived to have belonged to the MacLachlans since the 11th century. The MacLachlans intermarried with the kings of Kerry and the Lords of the Isles, as well as their Cowal neighbours, the Lamonts and the MacEwen. The clan supported Robert the Bruce, even though it was the King he displaced, John Balliol, who gave Gileskil(or Gillespie) MacLachlan the first charter to his Argyllshire lands.
The name MacLachlan means Son of Lachlan and in Gaelic, Son of the Northlands which in those days referred to Norway. Prior to the 18th century, the normal spelling was MacLochlainn.
This is a mixture of fact and legend; ancient annals claim that the MacLochlainns descend from the Milesian tribe from the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula; they were one of the Celtic tribes to settle in what is now Ireland and became known there as the Mileache tribe.
