Nothing can touch the empty ride
away from those that you love.
Nothing can make things less numb...
even the anesthesia that will be required.
Nothing can undo the missed
wave goodbye at the moment of departure.

Nothing can forgive or forget that
in your place, nothing could replace you.
With all my horrible guilt and anguish,
Nothing can ease any of the pain inflicted.

No uglier coward can make me feel better.
No imaginary remaking of the past
can seal my shame into a bright,
shiny box of self-forgiveness.

Always will I be sick in my heart for those
who loved me without reservation...
as the stranger that I became...
even to myself and with whom I ran away.
