Hints and Tips
Coat Cleaner:: Equine vacuums are wonderful for cleaning horses quickly, and effectively. But, they can be very costly. Instead, just use a normal hand held dust buster. They're very cheap compared to the equine vaccums, plus, they do the same thing. No More Snowballs: My poor horse. In the winter she gets major snowball build-ups on her hooves. I would bring her in to the barn, only to watch her slip and slide on the concrete floor. It took her half the winter to learn to stand without falling. I couldn't even pick her feet because she couldn't stand on three legs without slipping. Then I discovered Pam. The non-stick cooking spray kept the snow from sticking. A think layer can last up to three days, depending on the weather. It also works for mud, but must be applied daily. Coat enhancer: To add a bit of extra shine to your horses coat, and to help him gain weight, try adding 1/2 to 1 cup of corn oil to his grain daily. Removable Feeders: When installing corner feeders, put heavy duty screw eyes in the wall spaced to match the holes on the sides of the feeders. Then hang the feeders by attaching heavy boat snaps or carabiners to the holes and the screw eyes. The movement of the feeder discourages cribbers and the tub is easily removed for cleaning. It also allows you to easily remove uneaten feed in the event of colic. No Rub Blankets and Halters: An effective way to prevent blanket rubs is to lightly spray the area of potential rub with Show Sheen or a similar product. The blanket slides over area without rubbing. This works equally well, if a horse must wear a halter for long periods of time. Just sray the bridge of the nose, the cheels, and even under the chin and behind the ears. Fast Eaters: For horses who tend to eat they're grain very fast, try puting a large, heavy object (but not heavy enough that they cant move it.) in the bucket Then the horse has to stop, to mive the object before he can contiue to eat. Some people use rocks, but I prefer salt blocks. If you have any other hints or tips, please send them to me, and if they're good, they will be published on this site.
