Nelson was given or sold Long Island by his father, and in 1850 the Perley report on the state of the fisheries stated for Long Island " Mr. Ingersoll is the only resident settler; there is one clearing of no great extent - the rest of the land is in woods."
Nelson built and owned the 9 ton schooner "Skipjack; he bought, in 1852 a 10 ton schooner, "Emma", and in 1856 the 42 ton schooner "Lond Island Traveller", which was later owned by Warren Ingersoll and Owen Ingersoll.
When Nelson died in 1856 he left an estate valued at 2495 pounds, 11 shillings,8 pence, which included Real Estate at both Long Island and Woosward's Cove valued at 833 pounds, the "Long Island Traveller" valuedat 400pounds and the "Emma", valued at 50 pounds.
Nelson had a good sized fishing business on Long Island, as can be seen by the following, which is a partial list from hi Probate Record:

John left Grand Manan sometime after Mary died and emigrated to Massachusetts where he was a fisherman in Gloucester. In the 1870 U.S. census he was boarding at the home of Saunders Medler with several other men from PEI and Nova Scotia. At that time Annie, Saunder's daughter was 16 and, two years later, she and John married. They had one child and John was lost at sea in 1879. His name is on the fisherman's statue in Gloucester. In an interview in 1931, Bertha Kent said that Rebecca's son John drowned on George's Banks.
