IDM stands for Intelligent Dance Music. Other names are Braindance and Electronica. The style of IDM depends on the artist. Aphex Twin has used virtually ever style there is. Boards of Canada has an ambient style that sounds almost antique. Jega has a more futuristic sound. There is a very strong difference between IDM and generic techno. Techno is usually a lot simpler than IDM. A good techno song may have up to 4 or 5 beats, where as IDM can have up to 10. IDM could be considered noise or unpatterned music, but there is a definite pattern. The pattern is just not as up front as most techno. IDM will put you in a trance. It causes your brain to work. When you listen to it, and get into it, you start to hear every little sound in the song. You try to analyze it, and because there is no words, you can make it have any meaning you can think of. No music is similar to IDM. It's the most original type of music out. It's constantly pushing the limits of music. There's also a bunch of little things that make IDM cool.
