I look up from my magazine and my eyebrow slightly arches at the words of the high-pitched voice of the hair-dresser next to me. Her customer had requested to dye her hair blonde explaining that she thought her fiance would like it. Snip. Snip. Lisa trims my hair in silence because I have nothing to talk about. At least nothing I want to talk about. My personal life is my professional life and I doubt Diane would believe or care about the X-Files. I've heard that expression before and I always felt a little pang inside me. What about the redheads? We're so in the minority that nobody bothered to ask how men feel about redheads. If anything Mulder has proven that saying with Detective White and Diana Fowley. I bite my lip at the thought of them. But what about the redheads? Snip. Snip. We had been cutting my hair shorter but I decided that last time it was a little *too* short. Diane hums softly as she goes about her work, making sure all the cuts are even. He did almost kiss me in the hallway that one summer night. <but he just didn't want you to leave him> An evil little voice inside me replies. He told me he loved me. <*snort* he was heavily medicated at the time, he probably thought you were some big chested porn star> He kissed me on News Years Eve. <that was opportunistic, like the infection. completely unromantic> So men are expected to date blondes, marry brunettes and have life long platonic friendships with redheads? <exactly> Snip. Snip. "All done, Dana." I look into the mirror at my neatly trimmed but still red hair. I manage a smile for Lisa as she takes off the smock she had draped around me. There is a line at the front desk and I stand behind a woman with long brown hair as I wait to pay. All my life people have made their expectations of me pretty clear. And all my life I have looked at my expectations and chosen the other path. After Melissa my teachers expected me to be a terrible student, instead I became the top of my class. My dad had hoped that I would follow him in the navy like Bill. I chose science. In med school I was expected to maintain a professional distance from my teachers. I was drawn to Daniel. I was sent to shut Mulder down, I became his ally. I smile at the receptionist as I hand her my money. I give her another five dollar bill and ask her to put it in Lisa's box. She nods, her fashionably spiked white-blonde hair staying in perfect place. The bell on the door softly tinkles as I exit and begin the walk to my car. Men date blondes and marry brunettes. Redheads are expected to be just friends. But I've always ignored expectations and I don't think I'll stop now. ---------------------------- Send feedback to: The_Lady_Disdain@mailcity.com :-) More stuff at http://angelfire.lycos.com/myband/theladysfic ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Make new friends, find the old at Classmates.com: http://click.egroups.com/1/7075/4/_/599222/_/964139699/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------- The X-Files Creative Mailing List Archived at http://www.xemplary.com To subscribe, go to http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/xfc-atxc To unsubscribe, write xfc-atxc-unsubscribe@onelist.com Check out the XFC Feedback list http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/xfc-fdbk ---------------------------------- Imported to ATXC courtesy of NewsGuy news service http://newsguy.com
