joe anderl - guitar and vocals, lazy

Biography: Dayton, Ohio's Joe Anderl just wants to rock. A look at his extensive resume, which includes five bands in the last nine years, will tell you that.

Anderl kicked off his musical adventures in high school fronting the ska/swing outfit The Krusty Watch Guys (who took 2nd place in Canal Street Tavern's Summer long Dayton Band Playoffs). Shortly thereafter, Anderl graduated, and relocated to Athens, OH. During his tenure at Ohio University Anderl provided vocal/guitar duties in a number of bands including Tecumseh Motor Inn, Eiffel and Keaton.

Following college graduation, Anderl returned to his roots, relocating in Dayton (well the real truth is he got a degree from Ohio University and returned to "The Gem City" to take a job at a marketing company). Since his return, Anderl has caused quite a stir. First, he was sought out to assume duties as vocalist for Goodlife Recordings' Waking Kills the Dream (who earned a main stage slot of Cleveland artist Derek Hess' Hessfest), but he parted ways with the band 10 months later to pursue music as a solo musician.

Offering both encouragement and their unmistakable musical talents, friends John Lakes and Nathan Peters of Dayton's Captain of Industry convinced Anderl to record his debut EP and have helped guide him every step of the way. Over the last year, Anderl has done more than twenty solo shows, which have varied from full band affairs to intimate evenings with a single guitar and friends, sharing the stage with such bands as The Story Changes, The Beautiful Mistake, The All American Rejects, Motion City Soundtrack, Breaking Pangaea, The Pretty Weapons, Denovo and more.

On "Who Desires You," Anderl confronts his personal demons of working in a society that encourages great economic disparity through the prevalence of "profit over people." In "California Home," Anderl simply and passionately tells the story of a childhood relationship.

“Former Waking Kills The Dream singer Joe Anderl started the night off with a tight set of his newer solo material, which definitely showcases just how much he’s grown as a songwriter in the last six months. Anderl wears influences, ranging from Elton John to Ryan Adams and Jeff Buckley, on his sleeve. Lucky for us, he has the tenor warble to back it up. His subject matter is pretty on point too. Unwilling to settle for pop for pop’s sake, Anderl tackles tough topics like abusive family relationships and economic disparity in his subject matter. We were even treated to Anderl’s treatment of Jeff Buckley’s treatment of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (which my 12-year-old sister immediately recognized as, “the song from Shrek.”). While I’m always a little disappointed when Anderl withholds his Red House Painters, Ryan Adams, and Elton John covers, his 30-minute set had just the right amount of twists and turns to make it a highlight of the evening.” BETTAWRECKONIZE.COM
