Chapter Two

Blast From The Past--2 (kat)

"ROAD TRIP!!" Erin and I shouted as we loaded her luggage into the trunk of ym car. I love my car. It's a dark green mustang convertible with a tan top. It's sooo cool. My car is like my baby. Anyway, we loaded up the car and we were on our way. Erin was looking for a radio station. She tuned into one playing "I'll Never Break Your Heart," by the Backstreet Boys.

"Uh, Erin? Could you please change the station?"

She nodded. "Sure. I get it. History with Sean, huh? You'll get through it. The first boyfriend is always the hardest."

I looked over at her. "First? I don't think so, hun."

"Well, Kat, I've known you since you were 15. He's the only boyfriend I've ever known."

"I had one in Florida."

"Really? I never heard this story. Tell me, tell me!"

I sighed. Great. I hate telling this story. Oh, well. Here goes..."Well, his name was Alex. But when he turned, like, 15, he made everyone call him AJ, so that's what I'll call him in this little story. I grew up next door to him. When we were little, we were TOTALLY inseperable. We'd always be going to the park together, or going swimming."

"Awww, that is so cute!"

I smiled wistfully. "Yeah, I guess it was. Things went on like that for years. Then, when I was 11, and he was 12, we got these little crushes on each other. My mom hated it, but my dad and his mom both thought it was adorable."

"What about his dad?"

"You know, I never did find out what happened to him. He walked out on AJ's mom when I was 3. I only met him once, and I hated him. He pinched my cheeks, so I bit him."

Erin laughed. "Really? You little rascal."

"Yeah, I know."

"What was Aj's last name?"

"It doesn't matter."

"Yeah-huh. Tell me."

"All right. It was McLean."

"So, his name was AJ McLean. As in BACKSTREET BOY AJ McLean."

"Yup."

"That was a good one. You almost had me going there for a minute."

"I'm serious...do you wanna hear the rest of the story?"

"Sure. I could use a good laugh."

"I'm NOT joking...anyway, when I was 12, and he was 13, he asked me out. We couldn't really do anything at that age, but at least we had the title. When he was 14, he started getting involved with his friends Nick and Howie. Gosh, they were sweethearts. By then, we actually got to date. You know, movies, the mall, McDonald's..."

Erin started cracking up. "You've really rehearsed this, haven't you?"

See, that's why I hate it when people ask me this story. NO ONE ever believes it. But, I continued on. "ANYWAY, before I was so RUDELY interrupted, we were starting to date. But, a couple years later, things kind of changed. He was actually getting somewhere in that group of his, and my parents started fighting a lot more. Then, one day, everything changed...I remember it as if it were yesterday...

"Bye, Kat," Nick said as we hugged.

"Bye. Don't get into too much trouble over there in Europe."

"Haha. Don't worry. I'm 14. I can take anybody."

"Uh-huh. Sure," I said as I hugged Howie. "See ya, Howie. Watch out for AJ, ok? Don't let him get into trouble."

"Bye, Kat. And I'll watch out for him." Howie turned around. "Hey! Kevin! Brian! Nick! Wait up!"

I walked over to where AJ was sitting. "I'll miss you," I said with tears welling up in my eyes.

"I'll miss you too, Katty." We hugged until his mom came over.

"AJ, it's time to go."

"All right." AJ gave me a kiss. "Bye. I'll write to you as soon as I get there."

"Ok. Bye." AJ walked onto the plane, with one last wave to me.

"And later that day, my parents told me about the divorce. A week later, I was in Philadelphia. I haven't seen or heard from AJ since then," I said, wiping tears from my eyes.

"Oh, my gosh. You were serious, weren't you? I am so, so sorry."

"It's ok. I always kept up with his career, though. I just had to see what the kid was up to."

"Kat..."

"Yeah?"

"Is that why you sold the BSB ticket that we got you for your birthday?"

"Yup. I'm still sorry about that. I just...I couldn't face seeing him."

"Well, you're gonna have to, you know."

"We'll see about that."
