This is probably one of the most submissive US highway in the Carolinas. With the exceptions of Spartanburg and McDowell Counties, US 221 serves like a secondary road. Case in point, the fact that Truck US 221 (multiplexed with NC 105) is the faster and safer route to either Boone or Blowing Rock than the main route. Lastly, it is not surprising to find US 221 multiplexed with another US or State Highway along its way.
