Letter to the Participants of the Conference on Human Rights in Geneva, February 13, 1993.

We wish to notify you that the Serb authorities are using the forced induction of Hungarians in Voivodina to the armed forces, not only as a means of ethnic cleansing, but also as an instrument for accomplishing their direct political goals, and aspirations.

The events that have taken place recently in Csóka, a settlement with a predominantly ethnic Hungarian population, are a stark example of how ethnic cleansing in Voivodina is being used by Serb authorities for gaining ominous political advantages.

The DCHV, as well as the Serb democratic forces have achieved a convincing majority in the recent elections the municipal levels. In order to obliterate the functioning of the newly elected municipal governments, the police arrested Tibor BARTA, the Hungarian representative of the democratically elected municipal government of Csóka (Mr. Barta was born on January 16, 1962. He resides in Padé, Tito Marshall Str. 9.). Upon his apprehension, Mr. Barta was taken by the police to an unknown location, and his whereabouts is unknown.

Soon after, another Hungarian elected representative, Tibor POZSÁR was made to stand trial in front of a Military Tribunal in Belgrade on March 11, 1993 (Mr. Pozsár was born on July 11, 1955. He is residing in Csóka, Borisa Kidrica Str. 67.).

The DCHV is hereby asking you to pressure the Yugoslav and the Serb authorities for the release of these two elected municipal representatives. We are calling for the disengagement and liberation of all the illegally drafted ethnic Hungarian conscripts from the armed forces as well.

The Executive of the DCHV
