My Friend

I met up with a dear old friend I hadn't seen in years,
untouched by time or season - unlike all my peers.
My comfort in the storms of life who never took offense
at my periods of absence for which I had no real defense
Yet welcomed me with open arms and drew me to his heart
with shouts of great rejoicing that set my guilt apart,
and filled my soul with gladness that we had met again,
for He asked where I was going ~ not where I had been!

Invited to share in the feast prepared, I took all I could hold,
and relished every morsel ~ my weary heart consoled.
He sheltered me against the dark and bid my spirit rest,
but after He had strengthened me, awoke me with a quest
He clothed me in His armor ~ blessed with wisdom to cope,
Bound my heart in truthfulness and shielded me with hope.
He entrusted me with treasures worth more than man can count,
and then replaced the steed I rode with an eagle as my mount!

He gave to me eternal light so I'd never go astray,
and handing me His mighty sword, He sent me on my way.
I feared that I had lost HIm as I went around the bend,
But found Him hidden in my heart ~
