Bombing Run to Alabama

Memoirs of a B-17 Passenger.

Slaving away as a tour guide and protector for the EAA's B-17 Aluminum Overcast can have its rewards. I was fortunate to accompany the aircraft on a repositioning and flightcrew proficiency trip. Here are some of the images:

The B-17 is a WWII bomber. During the war, it usually flew with a crew of 11.

This is the view out of the waist gunner's position. We've just made a low pass over Carrolton, GA.

A view from the bombardier's position. Surprisingly, it isn't that loud, even with four massive radial engines nearby.

Looking out the plexiglass nose of the aircraft. The bombsight is in the bottom of the picture. We are headed West from Atlanta along I-20. If we dropped a full bomb load in Alabama, it would have caused millions of dollars in improvements!
