SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY: THE SONGS OF 1944

The songs on this web page were popular in 1944. Despite the very real uncertainty about the outcome of the war, the music of 1944 reflects enormous hope and joy. Just sit back and listen.

In late June 1944, Major Glenn Miller and the Band of the Allied Expeditionary Forces were stationed in England. They performed an unbelievable number of concerts for Allied troops, appeared often on the radio, and played for a long string of dances. Major Miller disappeared on December 15, 1944 over the English Channel on a flight from England to France, where he was going to make arrangements for a series of concerts by his AEF Band beginning Christmas Day in Paris. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are still being questioned.
