In it's Introduction, this website clearly indicates
that it is intended for use by both teachers and pupils as an aid to
understand of Mice And Men in preparation for the GCSE English Literature
examination. In the following Character section, it not only gives
information about the characters in this particular novel, but also some
very helpful tips on how to go about writing about characters in any text.
For example, it is suggested here that pupils should consider what
characters say, what they do, their relationships with other characters,
and should always back up what they write with evidence from the text. The
teacher or pupil may also find here, an account of the Themes within the
novel, cited here as; The Fragility of Dreams and Loneliness and
Friendship. Particularly helpful within this resource is the information
given on The Author's Technique. This is divided into four sub-sections
and describes how Steinbeck uses his narrative method to form the
Structure of the novel, how he skilfully controls the setting or Time and
Place, how the story is written in the third person but not from any one
particular Viewpoint, and how effectively he uses Language and Symbolism
throughout. The concluding section of this site is Responding to the Text
and here are some suggested oral and written activities, aimed to help
pupils to develop their understanding of the text.
