The instant that Logan set eyes on Marie, he felt his blood run cold. A growl grumbled low in the back of his throat, alerting his displeasure to the doctors in the room. His Marie, his beautiful, caring Marie, was submerged in a tank of greenish water, a multitude of diodes sticking out of her.
“What the fuck....” Dwyer mumbled, staring at Logan in shock.
Logan roared, brandishing his claws for Dwyer and the others to see. “Get the fuck away from her!”
Their only response was to stand there with their mouths hanging open. That pissed Logan right off. He advanced on the doctors, his growl increasing as he went into full attack mode. The first doctor offered no resistance whatsoever. Logan simply stabbed him in the gut with his claws, slicing through internal organs and killing him instantly.
That got the others to realize the danger of their new situation.
“Restrain him! Now!” Dwyer shouted, sidling behind the tank, placing it between himself and Logan. “Don’t let him get the girl!”
A group of text book trained doctors were no match for a lifetime’s worth of instincts. They could cut apart a body with precision. Alter it and change it to suit their purposes. However, they could not protect their own bodies. They simply ran at Logan, screaming and with scalpels in their hands.
It was easy for Logan to dispose of them. One received its throat torn out, the second was disemboweled and the third lost an arm. That left only Logan and Dwyer with a trapped Marie in the centre.
“This is not wise, Wolverine,” Dwyer warned, his voice trembling. “This entire place is filled with soldiers. You won’t get very far. You will be outnumbered in a matter of moments. It’s better if you just give up now.”
“I’d find that much more believable if you didn’t reek of fear,” Logan snarled, inching his way closer. His eyes locked on Marie momentarily. She was floating in the centre of the tank, suspended in the liquid within.
Dwyer reached a trembling hand towards the tray at his side. Logan growled in warning, stilling Dwyer’s movements instantly. At his feet, the now one-armed doctor moaned pitifully before losing consciousness. Seconds later, Logan smelt his death.
That left only Logan and Dwyer.
“You are a weapon, Wolverine. Ours to command and destroy on a whim,” Dwyer stammered, attempting to sound confident and failing miserably.
Logan growled, snapping his teeth. “I don’t take well to commands, boy. Now get her the fuck outta that tank before I find myself inclined to test these knives out on you.”
“You can’t order me around!” Dwyer shouted, momentarily manifesting a spine. A quick flash of Logan’s claws put an end to that. “They will destroy you, Wolverine. Don’t think that they can’t. You are only one person. Hell, not even that. You’re one mutant freak!”
In the blink of an eye, Logan’s arm lashed out and he grabbed onto the front of Dwyer’s shirt. Logan was rather surprised to find that he’d managed to retract the claws in the fraction of a second that it took him to reach over and grab hold of Dwyer’s shirt. Logan growled menacingly as he pressed the claws on his other hand flush against Dwyer’s throat. He couldn’t contain the smirk when the scent of Dwyer’s urine reached his nose.
“Got a little problem there, doctor boy?” Logan sneered, pressing the blades hard enough to draw blood.
“N-n-no,” Dwyer stammered, glancing everywhere but at Logan’s face.
Logan arched an eyebrow at Dwyer’s answer. “That so, doctor boy? ‘Cause it really doesn’t look that way from where I’m standing. And I can guarantee you that it’s just gonna get worse if you don’t get her outta that tank now.”
“And if I don’t want--”
Dwyer never got to finish his sentence. Logan’s patience was completely gone by then and he calmly slammed his claws the entire way through Dwyer’s throat. The man gazed at him with wide, unseeing eyes, blood pouring from his lips for a few endless seconds before he was dead. If he had more time, Logan would have made the bastard’s death much more painful, but he had to get himself and Marie out before anyone noticed that he was missing.
If had been Montgomery, though, Logan would have made the effort to drag out the man’s death.
“All right, Marie, let’s get you out of here,” Logan said softly as he retracted his claws and reached into the greenish goo that encased her. He extended his claws long enough to slice through the restraints locking her to the table before pulling them back in.
Almost too late he remembered about her mutation. Marie was dressed in nothing more than a pair of panties and a sports bra. That was a lot of lethal skin left out in the open. Pulling his hands out, Logan scanned the room for something that he could use to cover his naked upper body. His eyes were drawn almost instantly to a white blanket draped over a large piece of equipment. Rushing over, Logan grabbed hold of it and threw one corner of it over his shoulder so that it fell down over his chest. He reached in, slipping his arms under Marie’s shoulders and knees. With great care, Logan lifted her from the tank, holding her against his chest. He carefully rested her on the edge of the tank as he pulled off all the diodes that covered her body.
When the diodes were free, Logan’s eyes locked on the large tube sticking out of her throat. He had absolutely no clue what kind of damage he could do to Marie’s throat if he pulled it out wrong. Taking the chance, Logan wrapped his fingers around it and carefully began to pull. It was coming out easily enough. Suddenly, Marie began coughing loudly, her entire body spasming.
Logan stopped instantly, cupping her face lightly in his left hand. “It’s all right, Marie. It’s just me. Just try and relax. I need to get this tube out of your throat. I don’t want to hurt you, Marie.”
Slowly Marie’s eyes flickered open. As soon as her half lidded eyes locked on Logan, the corners of her mouth turned up into a smile. She nodded her head slightly and coughed again.
Taking hold of the tube once again, Logan began to pull it from her throat again. She began coughing again and he would have stopped had Marie not wrapped a goo covered hand around his wrist and continued pulling. It came free with a slick popping sound and Marie began to cough even more.
“Lo... Loga-an....” Marie gasped, smiling softly at him before her eyes slid shut.
“It’s all right, Marie. I’ll get us out of here,” Logan promised her as he wrapped the blanket entirely around Marie’s body.
Holding her slender body tight against his own, Logan slunk back to the door. He pressed his ear against it, listening for any approaching doctors or soldiers. He hadn’t come this far only to get caught. There were none, so Logan slowly eased the door open, glancing around to confirm what his ears had heard. There was no one so he slipped out into the corridor.
The corridors seemed infinitely longer than they had when he was alone. Marie was counting on him now. He had to get them both out to safety. Nothing else would suffice. Under no circumstances was he going to let them get caught again. It just wasn’t an option.
“.... The chip Davis designed will give us complete control over Weapon X. His every thought will be channeled to us. We can have him do anything we want.”
“Are you sure it will work?”
“I don’t know. That’s why we’re going to test it out on the Wolverine first. He can heal from any malfunctions. The Rogue can not....”
Logan’s temper flared when he heard that. Not only were they fucking with his body but they wanted to fuck with his mind.
“Come on, I want to check on the Rogue first. See how Dwyer’s coming along.”
Logan cursed silently at that and started jogging away from the voices. He flared his nostrils, searching for any scent that was clean and fresh. The building they were in reeked of sanitizers and disinfectants. If he could smell something clean and fresh, it meant a way out. The doctors had to leave sometime and if they did it would be through a door. A door that would let outdoor scents into the building.
“ATTENTION! SUBJECTS WOLVERINE AND ROGUE HAVE ESCAPED! REPEAT! SUBJECTS WOLVERINE AND ROGUE HAVE ESCAPED!”
“Fuck,” Logan snarled, taking off at a faster run. He had hoped that it would take them longer to notice that he and Marie were missing. He had wanted to be out the door before they realized he was gone, but Logan knew that was only wishful thinking.
Marie began to moan from all the jostling and Logan held her tighter.
“Don’t worry, Marie. I’ll get us outta here,” Logan promised her as he turned to the right at the last minute.
“Logan....” Marie moaned, struggling to open her eyes.
“Sit tight, Marie. It won’t be much longer,” Logan assured her, desperately trying to believe his own words.
Relief flooded through Logan as he caught a whiff of fresh air.
“Stop or you will be shot!”
Logan stopped instantly at the sound of a gun being cocked behind him. There was no question about him surviving a barrage of bullets, but Marie.... It would kill Marie.
He could heal her, though. Let her absorb his powers. As long as she wasn’t hurt too badly he could heal her. That decided, Logan pressed a quick kiss to the top of her head before he took off running again.
Logan felt the first bullet rip through his left arm before he heard the report from the gun.
