Overview:
In the book, there are several different animals that are the characters: a duck,
a turtle, a penguin, a frog, a crab, a hippopotamus, a swan, a lobster, an alligator,
and a snail. The book begins with several of the animals in a boat. As they story goes
on more and more animals come along the boat by saying, "Move over! Move over. Make a
little room for me." Each time the others shift making space for the next. This goes on
until finally all of them fall headfirst into the water because there are too many in the boat.
"Move Over" is a great book for teaching young children how to cooperate with one another
and share. Each time a new animal is let on the others are sharing the boat. By this, a child
will learn it is okay to allow others to use something. When the animals move over they are all
coming together and making room for the next animal, showing cooperation. Another lesson that is
taught is how not to be discriminative. By using different types of animals Ziefert is demonstrating
non-prejudice, non-racist, and non-discriminative behaviors.
