Me: What was your first reaction when you were told it was closing?
Scott: I said 'Shit. What am I gonna do?' - that was my first reaction.
Me: Was there a second one?
Scott: Yeah, I panicked a bit - well, you kind of panic for a while, and hope it's just rumours, everyone's wondering exactly what they're gonna say to us all when they ask the full company - crew and actors - on stage for a meeting.
Me: Do you know how fast the knews spread?
Scott: Very fast. Yeah, the next morning it was on the news -
Me: That was today.
Scott: Yeah, that's right, I had people ringing me - this morning it was on the news, yeah, my mother in law rang me up -
Me: They gave it a whole 10 seconds.
Scott: Absolutely, a whole 10 seconds, yeah.
Algie: That's it.
Scott: So there's going to be a lot of disappointed people, disappointed fans - I'm sure you're one of them - so, erm, I'm disappointed as well, I wanted probably another year on it. But that's the nature of the business really, so it's a bit unpredictable. That was my reaction.
Me: Ok.
Scott: But it's cool, it's cool.
Me: Do you know why they're closing it?
Scott: Me? I don't know
Ritchie: Cos it's a dreadful show. Dreadful.
Scott: A dreadful show, yes. No-one wants to see this mammaluke show any more.
Ritchie: I think they're closing it because of this end, because of money.
Scott: It's gotta be cos they're losing too much money.
Me: It's doing better than Cats, though, isn't it. And they're not closing that down, they're just letting it die.
Scott: I never even saw Cats. Yeah, it's kinda..
Ritchie: Yeah, well Cats has a smaller theatre, isn't it.
Scott: Absolutely.
Me: Not by much.
Ritchie: Well it's a smaller theatre.
Scott: It makes a little bit of a difference so you can...
Ritchie: And also, their overheads. I don't think their crew's as big. The crew - I mean, the crew's not as big, and also they get rid of people after 2 years so the cast are cheaper. The cast is much cheaper. That cast earns a lot less money than we do.
Me: And they've got 6-month runs.
Scott: Yeah.
Ritchie: 6 months.
Me: This is getting wonderfully off-topic, isn't it?
Scott: No, no no these are just things that we need to tell you people.
Ritchie: Also Cats is a much cheaper production to run.
Me: Yeah.
Ritchie: Look a the costumes, they only ever wear leotards.
Me: And they scribble on 'em themselves.
Scott: Do you have another question?
Me: (A very extended) Errr...... I did have one, I did... I did....
Scott: most people's reaction at first, deep down inside was 'I hope it's not gonna happen'.
Me: Even though most of them have said 'Oh well, it's had a good run, It's gone on a long time, can I go now?'
Scott: Oh, no.
TANNOY: Gary James contact Stage Door, Gary James.
Scott: It's just a front. Deep down inside, y'know, people are affected in their own ways, cos people have got houses, mortgages, children, so it does affect you.
Me: You gotta find something else high-paying.
Scott: Absolutely, absolutely. But that's the nature of the business, innit, you've got to accept it.
Me: This has gone on for 2 and a half minutes, this is wonderful!
Scott: Scot Murtaugh, Rocky1, Out. 2:38
