Backstreet Boys was hectic to say the least. As well as spending most of the year on tour, they have also been supporting the first artist signed to their own label, KRYStAL. We talked exclusively to pops very own SUPERGIRL! about her lucky break and of course the BSBs.

KRYStAL has been described by the BSBs has having the ‘voice of an angel’ and being a ‘songbird’. Anyone who has seen Krystal perform live would certainly agree that her voice is powerful.  Playing the piano during her performances, wearing lots of black, writing her own material and singing live makes her fall into a seperate category of pop princess.

The Backstreet Boys obviuosly chose Krystal because of how different and refreshing she is from many of the other pop acts of today. She has a unique style and of course most importantly, she is an amazing talent!

We spoke to KRYStAL about how she became the first artist signed to the Backstreet Boys label and the most envied girl by Backstreet Boys fans all over the world......

So has she always wanted to up on stage and be mingling with the stars? ‘I used to think maybe I might be doing this but my plans were actually to go to college and study music; little did I know this would happen’ However considering that Krystal ‘grew up doing this’ it is no surprise that she is now a signed artist ‘When I was two years old I went on the road with my parents and sang with them all over the States in churches.’ So when it comes to people who have been a big influence to Krystal it is no wonder that her parents are mentioned ‘my family are one of the big reasons that I am here today – I owe a lot to my parents.’

For people who haven’t had a chance to hear Krystal’s debut album ‘Me and My Piano’ let me tell you that it is an album, which has never left my CD player since the day I got it! Speaking about her album Krystal says ‘my album is like three styles. First of all it is soul.  I have a really big background in soul music.  I grew up listening to Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and of course I love Prince.  There is also the link there with those artists with the piano and it was cool to learn a lot from them. Then there is rock and roll – if you have seen my pictures, you’ll know what I mean! I also really love to bring rock into my performances! And the third part of my music is pop.’

Getting back to the ever-approaching debut single which is sure to be a hit in Europe with its funky pop beats and lyrics leaning towards ‘female empowerment’.  The song’s title is SUPERGIRL! so then who would Krystal like to be her Superman?! ‘Actaully I don’t have one, I have not got one in mind…unless I meet Lenny Kravitz (Krystal has admitted to having a crush on Mr Kravitz!) –he is very talented and I would love to sit down and talk to him. 

 If you haven’t seen the video yet for her debut song, you can look forward to cameo appearances from the Backstreet Boys! ‘I love to get cool people to come along and be part of the video so definitely expect more cameos in future videos!’ Krystal also likes to be part of the production for her videos and she was actually involved with the artistic input of this video ‘ Mook (Krystal’s manager) I drew up a treatment for this video and we also had a lot of artistic input with the album as well’ Certainly a lady of many talents…

Krystal’s journey so far has already seen her performing to massive crowds throughout the States. Among these performances was the KIIS FM Wango Tango event.  It was there that Krystal met her ‘new best friend’.  After her performance she was approached by Anastacia, Krystal recalls ‘she came up to me and was rattling things off like you’re great, I loved your performance…..oh and by the way I’m Anastacia! She is definitely the most awesome performer I have met and she is just out there being herself and hopefully we will record together in the future’.

Krystal’s debut song is also on the soundtrack to the latest Disney release ‘The Princess Diaries’, attending the premiere with her manager she explained what a great time she had! ‘it was my first premiere, and I had an awesome time walking down the red carpet! I sang for some media people there and I also got to meet Julie Andrews who I love!’ So will we be seeing Krystal venturing into the movies? ‘I would definitely love to do some acting, I have always wanted to do an action film, my favourite movie is The Matrix so I have always seen myself in that kind of role but then on the other hand I snort when I laugh so I could even be in a slapstick comedy…’

With an astounding debut album and her highly rated live performances it would be safe to say that Krystal will be taking home some awards in the near future – the highlight of many artists’careers.  So what award does Krystal have her eye on? ‘I have to be honest with you here, I am not thinking about awards at all right now, I would love to have the critics adoration and it would be cool but I think my biggest focus is to get to the masses and for the masses to get the album and be inspired by it and that would be the best award ever and after that – if I happen to win a Grammy then that would be great too!’

So what is Krystal’s long term goal? ‘ My goal in life is to be myself, I have been really blessed because the company who I am with and also the Backstreet Boys have just wanted me to be myself, it’s great to just be me! Being myself helps me reach out to people.  The goal of my music is not to be popular or cute it’s to touch peoples’ lives’.
