The Second Coming

The old Godspell is meeting the new Godspell tonight. Peggy Gordon, Sonia
Menzano and Robin Lamont from the original Godspell cast are paying a
visit to the current cast of the 30th anniversary production at the Theatre at
St. Peter’s Church.
Godspell, which reenacts the final days of the life of Jesus on earth,
originally opened off-Broadway on May 15, 1971 at the Cherry Lane Theatre.
The production moved to the Promenade Theatre and later to Broadway. The
Broadway run began at the Broadhurst Theatre on June 22, 1976. During its
66-week Broadway run, the musical switched houses twice. From the
Broadhurst it went to the Plymouth Theatre and then to the Ambassador
Theatre.
The 30th anniversary production of the musical began July 18 and opened
August 2. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics for the original
production, contributed new lyrics to this incarnation. The anniversary
production also features new musical arrangements. The cast features
Shoshanna Bean, Tim Cain, Catherine Carpenter, Will Erat, Barrett Foa,
Lucia Giannetta, Capathia Jenkins, Chad Kimball, Leslie Kritzer and Eliseo
Roman. Shawn Rozsa directed the current production.
This Godspell is running through Saturday, October 7 at St. Peter’s..
Although a production spokesperson told Broadway.com that, “the
producers are interested in transferring the production,” no plans have been
announced yet.
