I overheard the line "can I borrow that memory" in a conversation. Someone recalled a funny, but embarassing, moment and the other guy wanted to "borrow" that memory. The line stuck with me ..... and this is what it turned in to. I hear this as VERY traditional country. I think Josh Turner could do it well ...... Now, if I just had a melody (actually, this is one of the few lyrics I have where there is a fairly definite melody running around in my head but it just wont voice itself).
Any takers?

Can I Borrow That Memory

He told me 'bout a girl named Mary Lou
Said he met her way back in '43
Saw her standin' there in the old church yard
With her auburn hair and her eyes of green.

Said he knew right then he was gonna love her forever
Six months later in that very church they wed
They spent the next 48 years together
And I turned to that old man and I said ……..

(Chorus:)
Hey Mister can I borrow that memory
I don't want the one I got, 'cause you see
All I remember right now is how she walked out on me
So Mister, just for a little while, can I borrow that memory?

He told me all about their only child
A baby boy born in '45.
Dimple in his chin, little turned up nose
Daddy's red hair and momma's green eyes.

Said he knew right then he would love that child forever
They watched that little boy grow up so fast
A family that would always be together
And I turned to that old man and I asked …..

(Chorus:)
Hey Mister can I borrow that memory
I don't want the one I got, 'cause you see
All I remember right now is how she walked out on me
So Mister, just for a little while, can I borrow that memory?

Repeat Chorus ….
