John O’Regan Biography

John O' Regan is a Broadcaster and Freelance Journalist from Limerick, Ireland. His work has appeared in magazines such as "Irish Music", "fRoots", "Rock 'N' Reel', "The Living Tradition" and "Hot Press". He has also had articles and reviews published in the USA, Canada, Germany, Norway and Australia. He contributed to "The Companion to Irish Traditional Music" (Cork University Press 1999).

Through his broadcasting and journalistic work, John O' Regan has achieved a reputation as an authority on both Traditional and Contemporary music. He presented "Regan's Rambles" on Radio Limerick 95FM. John has appeared as a guest contributor on RTE Radio One, 2FM, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Merseyside, BBC Radio Derby, Downtown Radio (Northern Ireland), 98FM (Dublin), and Radio Kerry. He appeared as a guest contributor on BBC Radio 4’s "Kaleidoscope" in October 1997 and on "De Groote Boodschaap" on VRT Radio 1 in Brussels in September 1998 and WUMU in Cleveland Ohio USA in summer 2003 and Newstalk 106FM in Dublin in March 2004.

John O' Regan's depth of background knowledge has been classed as "Encyclopaedic" earning respect for his broadcasting and writing abilities. Irish radio presenter Mike Moloney described him as "Unreal, the guy really knows his tunes and he is passionate about his music." The Programme for the 1998 "St. Patrick's Day Celebration Festival" Celtic Music tour of Germany referred to John O'Regan as "One of Ireland's leading Music Journalists." John also wrote the introduction for the Programme for the 1999 "Potomac Celtic Festival" in Virginia USA.

John O' Regan has written liner notes for albums by leading artists including The Dubliners, Clannad, John Martyn, Fairport Convention, Renaissance, David McWilliams, Sean Tyrrell, The Furey Brothers, Ravi Shankar, Ashley Hutchings, Shantalla, and Curved Air.

He wrote the liner notes for ‘Spirit of The Irish-The Ultimate Collection’ by The Dubliners that entered the UK Album Charts at no 28 on March 12th 2003. Recent projects have included writing notes and compiling tracks for a new 3CD box set by The Dubliners –‘The Irish Folk Collection’ for June 2004 release on BMG Records. John has also written liner notes for Christy Moore ‘Whatever tickles your fancy’/ ‘Christy Moore’ for release on Raven Records (www.ravenrecords.com.au) and Sean Tyrrell’s new compilation CD ‘Rising Tide –A Collection Old and New’ on Long walk music (www.seantyrrell.com) and the UK and Worldwide release of this CD ‘The Best of Sean Tyrrell’ on ARC Music (www.arcmusic.co.uk) .

John has also compiled and annotated a collection of his favourite traditional and contemporary songs in the Irish language ‘Gaelic Ireland’. Released by ARC Music (EUCD 1821) this album features tracks by Altan, Kevin Conneff, The Dubliners, Cran, Brendan Begly, Katie McMahon and an exclusive unreleased track by Brian Kennedy ‘Taimse Im Chodladh’. John has also written liner notes for the Dubliners’ historic first three albums on Transatlantic records ‘The Dubliners with Luke Kelly’, ‘The Dubliners in Concert’ and ‘Finnegan Wakes’, and also writing notes for The Best of the Original Dubliners on EMI. John O’Regan also compiled ‘A Magical Gathering-the Clannad Anthology’ on Rhino Records in 2002.

John O’Regan has also worked on preparing Press and Promotional Packages for many leading Irish and International artists including Dolores Keane, Davey Arthur, Leslie Dowdall, and Mae McKenna. He has lectured in Music Journalism to City & Guilds and NCVA students in Dublin, Cork and Leitrim.

He has also given workshops on Irish Music History at leading Irish American Music Festivals including the Milwaukee Irish Fest (biggest US Irish Festival 128,000 capacity 2003) in Milwaukee Wisconsin USA, Dublin Ohio Irish Cultural Festival in Dublin Ohio and Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival in Cleveland Ohio USA and ‘Erin Feis’ in Peoria Illinois USA.

John O' Regan is a consummate professional broadcaster and a writer of great insight. He is worthy of his high-standing reputation. For him music is life and spreading its' good vibes his vocation.
