Pantera was formed in Texas 1983 by brothers Vince Abbott and Darrell Abbot along with Rex Rocker and Terry Glaze. Later that year they released their first album, "Metal Magic". In 1984, they released the groundbreaking "Projects In The Jungle". This album showed Pantera progressing in a bigger direction. 1985 brought the release of the third album, "I Am The Night" with it's ominous, eerie cover art. The band's skills were definately improving as they moved more towards a speed-metal approach. Between 1985 and 1988 Pantera took some well deserved time off and decided to part ways with Terrence. Their sound was getting much heavier and they needed someone who could fit this change. They recruited "The original circus freak", Philip Anslemo. Anselmo's Halford-esque high pitched wails and low-end growls fit Pantera perfectly on the classic 1988 release, "Power Metal". This album was so impressive that Dave Mustaine asked Darrell to join Megadeth, but he declined. In 1990, Pantera finally made it to the big leagues with their release of "Cowboys From Hell". A new fan base was formed and rock was dying. In 1992, "Vulgar Display Of Power" was released and the first metal single to ever debut at #1, Mouth For war was on that cd. This suprised all the critics, a metal band was doing exceptionally well. In 1994, "Far Beyond Driven" was released. The CD itself, debuted at #1!!! In 1996, Panter'as heaviest CD, "The Great Southern Trendkill" was released! With such success, Pantera decided to released a live album in 1997! The heaviest live album ever, "101 Proof" was released! After four long years, "Re-Inventing The Steel" was released! Pantera's goal is to create heavier albums each time and prooved it with this. For now, nobody knows whats going on with Pantera. Phil and Rex are in Down And Superjoint Ritual, while Dimebag and Vinnie are in their own band as well! Hopefully, one of the greatest heavy metal bands ever will eventually re-unite though! We certainly miss the heaviest shit in the land!
