The Electric Bass

Main Menu

"Bass Players deserve attention. I mean, without us it would be a thin, thin musical world!"

-311's P-Nut
Developed by Leo Fender, the electric bass was first sold in the early 1950's. This was after the development of the electric six string guitar but there were few guidelines in combining electricity with instruments.

Before the electric bass, the acoustic double bass was commonly used in jazz bands because it was the only form of bass they had. But as the electric guitar became more popular, these musicians needed a bass that could produce a louder sound and was smaller, creating portability. The smaller design also allowed them to play with better precision. Its body design comes from the origional electric guitar but still has the range of the double bass. These are many of the reasons why it was a very popular instrument from the very start.

As the electric bass became more popular, many different designs and affects have been applied to it. Body construction and neck shapes have become the trademarks of many different manufacturers. Now the bass is not just used in jazz, it is used in rock, concert, funk, and all genres of music.

From the Viol,

to the Double Bass,

to the electric bass.

The bass has come along way and brought countless numbers of people closer to music and giving people of all ages and races an enjoyable way to express themselves and their talents.
