What past Access Students Say

The Access course is a course that is designed for people who would like to further their education. It caters for adults over the age of 21 and as a mature student and a current Access to IT student, I find that the Access Course has helped me to develop my confidence in learning again.

The Access Course is designed for people who have been out of education for a long time. I am now in my final term (June 2003) and have thoroughly enjoyed this course. As a result, I have enrolled for the HND in computing. The tutors are really great and extremely approachable.

Assessment Methods A range of assessment methods is used such as assignments, essays, and examinations. You will be assessed throughout your course but especially at the end of the three main study blocks (called trimesters). These assessments will help you build up credits towards an Access certificate.

Programme Content & Delivery

The access programme contains a number of subject-specialist courses (called pathways). Each course is divided into units of study. As you successfully complete these you build up credits towards the award of the Access certificate which must be completed within a maximum of two years. Each course has core units (which must be studied) and a range of option units for you to choose from.

The Access Programme Route

Choose your Access Pathway, decide your long term aims, improve your study and keyskills at level 2 and begin to develop your subject knowledge (Level 2 is GCSE Standard) move on to study specialist subjects at level 3. Achieve a minimum of 16 credits at level 3 (one credit = 30 hours of study). Receive your Access Certificate issued by the awarding body 'West & North Yorkshire Open College Network' WYNOCN.

You can then progress to higher Education or Employment

The Access students work hard and are committed to their studies. I have found the group very rewarding to teach and enjoyed watching their progression.

The group has formed some strong friendship and this has made the atmosphere a relaxed and teamspirited environment.

The main progress that I have seen in students is the change in confidence. Lots of students started off being very quiet and shy and at the end of the course they have developed confidence and begin to express their views. Sometimes they eventually change their ambition and the course has helped to open their eyes to opportunities. The Access course gives a broad based learning in the subject area which is one that the University will recognise.
