D-18GE & 1961 00-18
The headstock of the D-18 Golden Era (based on the 1934 D-18) and the headstock of a 1961 00-18. In the thirties, the Martin headstock had very square corners. The D-18GE has this "squared and tapered" look. By the 1960's, the Martin factory equipment had worn, resulting in a more rounded appearance. They retooled (I believe in 1969 or 1970). It's easy to spot Martin guitars from that era just by the shape of the headstock. Note the decals on both guitars, the nickel Waverly tuners, and Brazillian overlay.
1937 D-18 AND 1936 D-18
The guitar on the left is a 1937 D-18, owned by Chuck Egner, Hi Strung
from
the UMGF. The guitar on the right is a 1936 D-18, owned by Rob Newsom.
When they play, they sit about three feet apart, facing each other, and
switch
guitars with each other after every song (I don't make this stuff up).
