Not much of the old road remains except for a few sections around Vega, Adrian and Glenrio. Vega is clean but appears depressed. Adrian seems to be bouncing back, though, and one reason is the MidPoint Café. This wonderful place is at the purported middle ground between Chicago and Los Angeles. I suppose it depends on how you calculate such things (we put the western terminus at Santa Monica Pier, so the midpoint as we reckon it is probably somewhere closer to San Jon) but why quibble? Especially if you can get Ugly Crust Pies or personalized service from the owner! She told us we were fortunate to have arrived on that particular day as she would be out of town on a dental appointment the next day. And so we were. Coffee was excellent in a non-Starbucks kind of way, the food was down-home delicious and there was an amazingly comprehensive gift shop just off the dining room. This was our consolation for having missed the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. We spent more than we should have and tipped handsomely, and walked out feeling like winners. Not like victims.
We stayed on the old road as far as possible and intended to take 66 west of Glenrio into San Jon. But the road turns to gravel after you pass the New Mexico line (which runs through the middle of Glenrio, now a bonafide ghost town) so driving the Corvette any further along that route was not a good plan. Next time, a Jeep.
