Fun with sharp objects! (a.k.a. reed making)


Two views of my first attempt at reed-making.
4/1/2003. I think I was the April Fool.
Note that the reed is tied in shit-brown thread. There is a good reason I chose that color...and the baby shit yellow for this page. It happens.

What I did:
- Stripped thread off reed blank with paring knife.
- Cut clarinet reeds to size and approximate shape needed*
herein lies the fatal flaw of my process
- Bound clarinet reed pieces to blank with scotch tape.
- Wound thread around that.
- Gave up.
What I learned.
- Don't try to make oboe reeds from clarinet reeds. Like alchemy, it doesn't really work that way...
- Get a real reed knife.
- $10 is a small price to pay to avoid this aggravation.
