The Chinese Zither

The Guzheng is a classic Chinese instrument that originated over 2,300 years ago and is one of China’s oldest plucked instruments. Because of its melodic qualities and range of sound, the Guzheng was extremely popular in the emperor’s court and was used to play a variety of folk and classical Chinese music. The instrument’s frame is constructed of wood, with twenty-one nylon strings supported by individual tuning bridges allowing the instrument a variability of range exceeding four octaves.
