Phoenix Rising

The sunset over the hill;
Fiery red glows,
Emberlike,
Fading.
Stormclouds swirling,
Lit from within by
Seething flame.

The bird rises from its nest.
Flapping strong and
Wild,
Into the clouds it flies,
Wings beating the air
As a silent protest.

Lightning flashes,
Reflecting brilliantly off
Shiny feathers,
Illuminating
The bird against the
Darkness.

Deep into the storm he flies,
His cry ringing shrill
Midst the crashing
Thunderous air.
He spirals
Upwards,
Straining to be free
Of the forces bonding him
To the earth.

Strike!
In a brilliant flash
He dies and is
Reborn
A thousand times over.
Brilliant and glowing
He rises above the clouds
And spreads his wings
To soar.
