Start Right With Beauty

And what better way to start than with this advice from a beauty expert.
Few of us are born beautiful, with perfectly proportioned faces, and flawless skins. But even if you haven't been blessed with eyes like Sophia Loren or features like Ursula Andress, nothing can compare with the healthy glowing complexion of youth. If you feel the time is now to start using make-up do be careful not to spoil what nature has already given you.
The cosmetic counter offer big attractions with a host of skin care and make-up items just begging to be tried. This is a time for experimenting, for finding out which products suit your particular skin and which cosmetics are right for your particular colouring. Although mother or sister may be willing to guide you, professional advice is best, and most large stores and chemists have specially trained girls who will only be too eager to help you make the right choice. However it is not always possible to go and seek help professionally. So Eve Gardiner, Max Factor's Chief Beauty expert, who daily receives many requests from teenagers, has some very useful advice to give on beauty routine.

Here's the routine.
For young girls she suggests a simple routine. Nevertheless it is vitally important, because now is the time to lay the foundation of beauty. The habits you form in your teens will remain with you for the rest of your life. First and foremost is skin care. Thorough cleansing night and morning is essential. However tired you may be after a part or record session, don't flop into bed without removing your make-up. It only takes a few moments to whisk away all traces with cleansing lotion. Follow with a brisk toning by patting skin freshener, sprinkled on a piece of cotton wool, all over your face and neck. Even very young skins can be rather dry, so a light application of dry skin cream once or twice a week will counteract this. Teenagers often suffer from disturbed skins, resulting in spots and blemishes and, occasionally, in bad cases of acne. There's no need to be miserable, with special creams and lotions you can control this and, believe it or not, you will almost certainly outgrow the spotty stage.
If your skin does appear very spotty, it's a good idea to have a check up with your doctor, just to make sure there's no medical reason for this. Even if you are unfortunate enough to have persistent acne, don't despair; there are many effective cures nowadays and you are most certainly not doomed to go through life with blemished skin. Your doctor will advise you about this. Assuming there is no medical reason for any skin disturbances, you can easily set about clearing up the trouble by using specially formulated cosmetic preparations which beauty experts at your local stores will be pleased to recommend for your particular skin type.
At night cleanse your face with a gentle corrective cleanser or cosmetic soap that will help to remove unwanted oils as well as deeply embedded particles or dirt. Rinse this off with plenty of fresh warm water. Then, while your face is still wet, squeeze out a pad of cotton wool in cool water and sprinkle lavishly with an astringent lotion especially for disturbed skins. Pat the lotion thoroughly all over your face and neck. Finally, before going to bed, apply a little medicated corrective cream to spots or blackheads. In the morning follow the same cleansing and toning process. Keep to this routine and you'll be amazed how quickly your blemishes disappear.

Beauty by Day
In the daytime, of course, more obvious spots can be easily disguised with a light touch of make up. Use a medicated liquid foundation in a shade matching your complexion tone, a light dusting of powder to "set" the foundation, and just a hint of lipstick to complete the effect. Max Factor do have a range of delicately coloured lipsticks for the younger teenagers; these give lips the barest tinting of colour, which you can pretend is sweetly and naturally your own.
But when it comes to looking you best, there's no real substitute for sleep. Being over tired is a sure way of becoming run down and only encourages spots, so try and get at least eight hours' sleep a night. Your skin will also benefit from plenty of fresh air, so get out and about as much as you can. In small doses sunshine helps considerably to clear up spots as it dries the oily secretion of the skin which can otherwise build up and block the pores.
Don't overlook your hair. Keep it as clean and as healthy as you can for grubby locks can be the cause of unseemly spots of the shoulders and forehead. Before launching your "beauty buy", plan just what skin care items you are going to need and buy the best you can afford. Save a little each week from your pocket money so that when particular items need replacing you'll have enough money. Extra shillings received at Christmas and birthdays can be used to buy anything you particularly want to experiment with, such as eye make-up, lipstick colours and nail polishes.
Do be sensible about starting right with beauty, as this really is the only way you can be sure of always looking your prettiest.
