Adam Pascal made his debut theatrical performance in RENT, for which he received the 1996 Theatre World Award for Best Actor in a Musical, as well as nominations for the 1996 Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Prior to joining the cast of RENT, he played guitar with the group Mute.
I was Born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, in the same town as Idina Menzel. I realized at ten or eleven that music was what I wanted to do with my life. The singers I loved while I was growing up were from these amazing heavy metal bands. They were expressive and they had the most beautiful, incredible voices. The singer from Queensryche; Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden--the guy's brilliant! They had real quality in their voices, and I would try to sing along. Half the time it was way out of my range. Look at the character I'm playing. Jonathan had told me he was kind of Kurt Cobain, kind of Eddie Vedder. And I thought, "Well, those are the two guys everyone's going to pick." But in Jonathan's defense, he was a theater guy. When he said those names, I knew that the way I sing would work. He was looking for the passion. At this point in my life, everything's going to well that I should be smacked if I complain. A little notoriety, opportunities to do some films here and there. How could you argue with that? I've just got a new band together and I'm writing music. I've auditions that have gone very well, and a couple that didn't. At one audition, they said, "He's real green." I am real green, and in the process of becoming a lighter shade of green.
