So, how liberated are The Libertines?
Pete: What, right at this moment in time? I'm feeling very liberated. Just played a good gig, had a good time.
Carl: I'm however liberated you want me to be!!
Oi Cheeky!
Whats it like to be called London's answer to the Strokes?
P: Who's said that?
Um.....everyone. NME, The fly, Kerrang? You look like them aswell!
C: We look like them? That will be the hair!
P: I've only heard of us being compared to The Jam, but being compared to The Strokes is a big compliment, they're a good band. I'm very flattered
NME have also said you're the best British band this year. How does that feel?
P: There's a lot of good new bands around. I don't think you could say we are the british band this year because there are so many good guitar bands coming out now with such different styles, you can't really compare them.
Still on the subject of NME, it said that the interview you did with them was your first ever interview. Does that mean this is your second ever interview? 'Cos that would be good (for us) if it was!!
P: No it's not. NME doesn't even know what its talking about half the time.
Yeah, NME's crap!!! (dispite them putting you on the cover last week!). Were you shocked at the first single you released getting to number 37 in the charts?
P: It had actually got to number 22 by Sunday, but the charts only go by how many CD's were bought up to Saturday afternoon, CD's bought on Sunday aren't taken into account which is a shame.
How do you feel about 'What a Waster' being banned from daytime radio due to its lyrical content? Were you expecting it?
P: It's stupid but thats Radio 1 for you. They're only words. They don't even mean anything half the time. We weren't really expecting it to get banned, but i guess when you think about it it's pretty obvious it would have been. It's just one of those things. I think XFM are playing it though.
Is it true you used to have a bass player who left to fight for the Taliban?
C: Yeah, we only had about 3 practice sessions with him, and then he turned around and said, "right, im off to join the Taliban tomorrow"! We were just like, "what the fuck?". He seemed like a really nice guy aswell. We haven't heard from him since.
Are you looking forward to playing the Reading and Leeds festivals?
C: We're at Glastonbury aswell. I love festivals, they're so chilled out and you get people coming to see you who wouldn't normally. It's kind of like an artists showcase!
So are you looking forward to it??
C: Sorry, yeah we are.
You've got a song called 'Time for Hero's'. Who are your hero's?
P: Loadsa people you probably haven't heard of
Like who? We might have heard of them. Go on, try us!
P: Lambard and Spannard?
We've heard the name. There was some secret band playing at the Park a few weeks ago who used the name Lambard and Spannard to disguise what their real name was. Apparently they never turned up though.
P: Yeah that was us!! We had to cancel at the last minute. Were you going to go?
Oh my God! That has got to be a hOOchy* exclusive! We went to the park for about 2 seconds to find out who it was, nobody knew so we came here to watch Halo. Wow!
What was it like touring with the Strokes and The Vines? Did you get along? and what did you learn from them?
C: We toured with Matchbox 80 aswell. It was good fun, they're all good blokes and we had a good time. It was good 'cos they played in such big venues which we had never done before so that was a learning experience. You do learn a lot touring with different bands.
Where do you hope to be by the end of 2002?
P: I hope to be in a position to be able to answer that question.
What has been your biggest achievement to date?
C: We'll tell you in 6 months!
Right, this is a question you have to answer NOW. Who or what annoys you musically?
P: John, Gary, ( the other 2 band members). Everyone really. I honestly can't think of one person who doesn't annoy me intensely.
Britain and America are renowned for making good music. Why do you think Europe cant rock?
P: What about Abba? They were good. There must be some other good european bands.
C: I don't know really. Why do you think?
Probably 'cos they don't have very good taste in music. The whole thing about them liking David Hasselhoff still worries us. Its not normal.
Whats your biggest ambition?
C: Probably just something predictable like being good at what we do.
(The official hOOchy* question) ....What do you think of Peterborough?
© hOOchy* 2001
C: Oh its really cool. Its seems like a really nice place, yeah. I like the way its big a town surrounded by lots of little villages. Very nice.
P: Is that it? Can we go and get drunk now?!
Only if you're buying!!!
************************************************************************************************
When we said "only if you buying", we didn't quite expect them to come back with a pint of vodka and red bull for us which tasted like it had about 8 shots in, and which was also kindly topped up with whisky by the singer of the Candys! but hey, we're not complaining!!
