Kiss a senior good-bye!

Looking Back At My Past 5 Years In The Nutley High School Raider Marching Band Color Guard, I'm Just Bombarded With Memories. Like Getting Yelled At for Being On The Wrong Foot My First Year. Or Getting The New Uniforms We Desperately Needed, & Of Coarse I'll Never Forget Being Captain My Junior Year, Even Though This Might Seem Like Little Stuff To You, Its Big Stuff To Me. I Remember Getting My First Serious Relationship When I Was A Sophomore In Band, He was A Drummer & I Was A Guard Member- Everyone Would Always Watch What We Did, Cuz We Were The Only Band Couple That Year, That Lasted From Sophomore Year Till Half Of My Junior Year. I Also Remember Taking My First Trip To Disney With The Band-Performing In MGM Was Such A BIG Rush. One Of The Best Memories I Have Was From My Sophomore Year, Coming In First Place At The EMBA Roselle Park Coemption, And We Were Actually Up Against Other Bands! It Was So Great, I Remember The Tears Rolling Down My Eyes. Speaking Of Tears, The Band Season Hasn't Really Started Yet, And I Know When Champs & Senior Recognition Comes Around, Nothing Is Gonna Stop Those Tears From Coming Down. I'm Just In Shock That This Is My Last Year With The NHSRB, I Have Soo Much Fun, Soo Many Memories, Both Good And Bad, That Will Remain With Me Forever. So Far This Looks Like The New Staff Is Working Hard To Get Us Out There, Win & Have Fun All At The Same Time. I Know My Senior Year Will Be My Best, Mostly Cuz Everything That Happens This Year-I Will Treasure For The Rest Of My Life. Sure People Have Come & Gone In The Band & Guard, But The Memories I Made With Them I Will Keep In My Heart & Mind For As Long As I Can.

Well, we just started up our indoor guard, and I realized how very much I'm going to miss everything. I've spent the past 3 years of my life dedicated to guard, and my only regret is that I waited until sophomore year to join instead of 8th grade. I have grown more through colorguard than anything else in my life. I've made friends that I know will last a life time, I've been to places I would never go if not for guard, and I've learned humility, and that just cause you don't have a title, doesn't mean you can't help the people that need you. Through guard I have met one of my best friends, I know, that even though we're parting this year, we will always be in each other's hearts. Through guard I made my first trip to Disney World, flew on a plane for the first time, and been to California for the first time. Also, even though I was promised the captain position, and I really felt I deserved it, I learned to cope with not being captain, and knew that my whole guard and the instructers treated me with the respect and dedication any captain should have. They treated me as captain, and I did all that I could for them. With guard and band, I found out what it felt like to be a champioin, winning 1st place in USSBA Group 2A Silver in 98, and Group 2 Open Silver 2nd place in 99 & 00. Also through guard I found out just how hard bandcamp really is.....who would have thought something called "Bandcamp" is hard. My first boyfriend asked me out at a football game I would have never been at if it wasn't for guard and band, and then, when he broke up with me, I had 50+ people telling me he didn't deserve me, and I could do better. I overcame my fear of a sabre and now can toss a quad.....not much for some of you pros, but for a guard who usually does two or three, a quad is a big deal. I learned to respect each and every one of my fellow guard members, whether we were best friends, or had a lot of personal conflicts. And finally, although it's repeating some things I already said, I made a family with guard and band. When I had little freshman looking at me with the awe that I look at former upperclassmen, I knew I belonged, and that my director, coaches, and peers were some of the most important people in my life. The tears I cried at Champoinships are tears that I will never regret. The memories I have with guard will last forever......it's one of the most cherished chapters in my book of life. Melissa Muha

I have so many great memories of colorguard. I think the best are the ones of the people and the bonding. It's sad to see people go i know because i've seen so many. I want to tell every one @ SHS that being Co-Captain was awesome and i love you all. To the flaggots Thank you for all the memories. To the drummers, you guys are awesome, now just grow up j/k. And to the Marching Black Knights band and colorguard as a whole, way to kick major ass Div. 3 New England Champs!! We were so close to that platnium medal. Hopefully you'll do it next year! Good luck and i'll miss you all! To Katie and Julia, " Kribbon I'm pooping! " oh and guard don't ever forget our buddy Lenny (insert leg thing here)LOL

love Jessica K.

When I look back at y i joined guard i cant help not to laugh. well i had always been a member of the band (i played clarinet and was in percussion), and always liked the whole bandie thing, but ended up quiting band completely my freshman year to play volleyball. ( In the words of my volleyball coach, "There is no possible way u can do both volleyball and marching band, take ur pick") I eventually chose volleyball, but having so many friends that were in band; Guard mostly, i was constantly involved in all the bandie activities. I mean, I was constantly dragged to practices ( that was me sitting up in the bleachers by myself if u must ask!), fundraisers, competitions, and i was probally the only 1 watching them at halftime at football games. I barely knew what color guard was, ( like most poeple), and before long I had developed and interest for it. I mean I could practically get out on the florr w/ my high schools winter guard and do the show w/ them!! But what really convinced me to join was the fact that I was absolutely obsessed w/ a trumpet player!! I was tottally in love w/ him, and wanting to spend as much time w/ him as i could, I joined color guard. But u know what? As soon as i joined, I completely forgot all about that band geek. When ur in color guard there are so many other things u have to think about!! And besides, I found the poeple in the drumline to be much cuter!!

I was in guard for 3 years. I graduated in June 2000. I didn't think I would miss guard as much as I do. I met so many life long friends and an awesome coach who would do anything for her girls! Being in guard has taught me to stick with things, even when they don't always work out.....*like the 3rd song of our field show, that we never did really learn, but pretended like we knew it* , and practices always seemed to get my mind off of things when things weren't going right. My high school guard may not have many flags or nice uniforms *that match*, but we have girls *some* who have determination to be the best they can be, and that stands past the flags and uniforms. And even though we never really had anywhere to practice, we got used to practicing in the parking lot with out hitting a single car LOL. I went back to my high school this year and marched in the NYC Columbus and St. Patrick's Day parades and 2 local parades, I even marched with a rifle for the first time. I miss it soooo much! Soon I hope to try out for the Lehigh Valley Knights of Penn. so I can get guard back in my life. Message to my girls: You guys are the best, you have determination and talent. You just have to learn to put pety stuff behind you. Keep your heads up, without looking at the hot lacrosse players next to us,*SMILE*, and keep twirling...always remember *YEAH BABY YEAH*. I'll be back to visit. *Veterans*: GREASE LIVES ON! when all else fails warm-up #1 *drop spins, rowing, maces, figure 8's* even if you are tired of it! haha! *New'bes*: Stick with it, you'll get it soon enough *Mrs. Devine*: Thanks for everything...you're a great coach and friend. I'll be back to visit, as long as you e-mail me the routines so I can twirl :-)

I just cannot believe that it is my senior year. I know that everyone always says that but it is soooo true! I remember my first day of colorguard. I really didn't know what it was, but i went to the audition with my 2 best friends, Julie & Jackie. I was really nervous because so many people tried out. Later that night, my instructor called to tell me that I made the team and I was overjoyed. That lead to 4years of total fun. From learning drill in the parking lot--to getting a new band room. I met my current boyfriend and love of my life in band. We didn't start dating since I was a junior, but I always loved to stand by him in march off's. I met my best friend, Jill, in guard too. Let's just say that my two favorite people in the whole world originated from my one choice to be in guard. In my junior year, we made it to state for our marching band show of Gettysburg. We all cried b/c we were sooo happy. I can remember our winterguard shows of "dream" "rock this town", but with! oranoco flow we actually started to make something of ourselves. Then, this year we just won our first 1st place ever. That was such a big feat that we were all so excited ppl thought we won the lottery. I know that this was a rocky year with our new band director & all, but we were able to show the band who we were. We got first place at Harrison and we never let that pride fall from our eyes. We are some of the most determined girls ever. I love all of my guard members and I will miss you bunches! I love you! M&M"S rock! I wish u all luck in the future

I marched guard for 5 years, and as i look back, all i can think about is all the good times i've had. of course there were bad times to go along with it, but you look past that. My senior year was so hard for me, there were times i wanted to quit so bad...i couldn't take it anymore, but when we won first place at championships...i had this feeling like omg...it's all worth it now, putting up with all the crap i did..it was all worth it. and i'm so happy that i was influenced to join guard my 8th grade year, with out guard my life would be so different. I'm so happy to finally get out of high school and expierence "real Guard" cuz independant guards are no way at all like high school ones...drum corp here i come! hehe! i'm going miss EVERYONE back in my high school guard...but..it's time to move on!
