Well, damn it. I hate not having money. Why? Because it prevented me from getting the only album I really wanted this week: Shelby Lynne’s Identity Crisis. Instead, I had to settle for Gemma Hayes’ Night On My Side, which turned out to be much cheaper (wink, wink). Most of you will get that, some will not. Anyway, Hayes’ debut is a great consolation. I first heard about it in May and finally decided to get myself a copy on Saturday. It was originally released in the UK back in August 2002 and hit US shores this past April. A fine album indeed, it enters at No. 1. Now, if you were to ask a Magic 8 Ball if I would get Shelby’s CD next week, it would probably say “All Signs Point to Yes.” Except, not my Magic 8 Ball, because it’s broken. It’s missing some liquid and all I ever seem to see when I use it is one of the corners of those freaky 3-D shapes (that have the answers printed on them) and it looks like some ghostly hand from another dimension pointing its condemning, evil finger at me. Creepy.

In happier news, Stacie Orrico’s life-affirming “(There’s Gotta Be) More To Life” rockets 23-1, making it the biggest jump to the top spot since Mary J. Blige and Method Man discovered “Love @ 1st Sight” on Jul. 20. The three new entries this week are Seal’s “Love’s Divine,” at No. 21, Holly Palmer’s “Just So You Know,” right behind, at No. 22, and Gavin DeGraw’s “Follow Through,” at No. 24. I would like to see the Palmer and DeGraw songs becomes radio staples, because these are two singles that really deserve to be mainstream hits. Elsewhere, Obie Trice’s ever-so-entertaining “Got Some Teeth” finally gnaws its way into the Top 10 while FeFe Dobson shows real progress, climbing 20-12.

On both charts, titles, such as "Number One," etc., are self-explanatory. However, the "Top Debut" honor only applies when there are two or more new entries.
