Fiona Apple's odd, and oddly engaging, "Extraordinary Machine" finally claims the pole position, after five weeks of holding strong at No. 2. The brilliant unofficial single from Apple's long-delayed album of the same name may be the first song in quite a while to reach No. 1 that has no discernable drums or drum-machines. Weird, huh? Down on the albums chart, something kind of unexpected happens. Rilo Kiley debut at No. 1 with More Adventurous. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a great CD, but when I went to Best Buy last night, I totally planned on buying the awesome Jon Brion's I Heart Huckabees soundtrack. But Best Buy's dumb ass didn't have it, so I ended up selecting a copy of RK instead. And I really do like it. A lot. (P.S.--I saw Huckabees in theaters the same evening, and it was great. Find my Amazon reviews link to read my critique.)
A few songs are showing major signs of progress, and that includes Tina Arena's "Italian Love Song" (which blasts 10-4), Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For?" (12-6), U2's "Vertigo" (with a move of 19-11, it's the week's Biggest Mover), Vanessa Carlton's "White Houses" (21-17), Hilary Duff's "Someone's Watching Over Me" (32-26) and Mandy Moore's "Hey" (33-27). There are only three debuts this week, all of them outside the Top 40. This includes new ditties by The Corrs (No. 45), Van Hunt (No. 47) and Celine Dion (No. 50). The last one there, Dion's "Ain't Gonna Look The Other Way", isn't from her craptastic new Miracle album but rather a holdover from A New Day--Live In Vegas. Along with "You And I" (No. 21 in week 19), it was one of only 2 new studio recordings on the disc. And, man, these two great songs could totally kick the asses of all 13 songs on Miracle. In fact, I would actually pay money to see that.
CRAP SINGLE OF THE WEEK: USHER "RED LIGHT" Think everything Usher's doing lately is on fire? Then clearly you haven't heard this dud, off the special edition of Confessions. It's a nerve-grating chaos of noise, with music that clearly tries to ape "Yeah"'s synthetic flourishes, and boy, does this have a mess of a beat. If this highly dated-sounding piece of crap is the future of Usher...well, then it's time for me to invest my money in a different stock. D-
