AND THEN HE SAID...

I haven't done a commentary in God knows how long, so I thought, Hell, why not supply some useless but fun facts for all my visitors to digest? So here goes...

FACT THE FIRST: Ms. Dynamite's first official single in 2+ years, "Judgement Day", takes one hell of a leap to No. 4, after debuting at No. 41 last week. The song probably would have debuted in or around its current position, but I just got a hold of it at the last minute before making the Aug. 28 list, hence it's actual entry point and this week's boost. The single arrives in the UK (as a double A-side with "Father") on Sept. 26, one week before the full album, Judgement Day, drops.

FACT THE SECOND: Speaking of the UK, three of this week's tracks are available as singles only in that region (or other parts of Europe) and include Ms. Dynamite's "Day", as well as new entries by Jo O'Meara ("What Hurts The Most", No. 39) and Charlotte Church ("Crazy Chick", No. 50). Both of the latter are surprisingly good, and for different reasons regarding different sets of expectations. O'Meara's "Hurts" is a pleasant surprise because it comes from the least interesting member of the now defunct S Club and is a remarkably good remake of a 2003 Mark Wills song. Church’s “Chick”, on the other hand, is flooring because it finds the opera chanteuse submerging herself in some good, old-fashioned, Motown-style Brit pop. The track is great fun, and it’s really starting to grow on me – though it’s had a little trouble charting since I first discovered it at the beginning of summer. It earned a few plays here and there, stalling at No. 22 on my iPod list on June 19. However, after I waited around to see what second pop single “Call My Name” was like (it’s not so great), I decided I’d go ahead and chart “Chick”, which is now gearing up to be a major fall hit (well, for me). If it does in fact reach the top 10, it would be Church’s third track to do so, following “Just Wave Hello” (No. 9, 1999) and “The Prayer”, her duet with Josh Groban (No. 2, 2001).

FACT THE THIRD: I finally won something I actually wanted: Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten. My friend was generous enough to copy it for me a few weeks ago, but since grabbing a hold of the actual disc, it has gone into heavy rotation in my CD player – since Sony is retarded, and their “copy protection” makes it only compatible with the, ahem, Sony mp3 player. Which means it can’t go on my iPod. Which makes me think the “copy protection” has much more to do with them trying to forcibly integrate their own player than “protecting the content,” but what can you do, eh?
