Well, after 16 weeks, Jem at last takes No. 1 on the albums chart with Finally Woken. Over the previous weekend I had given the whole disc a spin and decided I like it even more than I had previously thought. Almost every song is memorable or cool in some way, and I've discovered new favorites in "24" and "Missing You." If you don't have it, buy it -- now!! I'd easily place it amongst Nellie McKay, PJ Harvey and Mindy Smith as one of my favorite CDs of 2004 thus far.
After two hit J-SKWD singles, "Can't Turn Back" and the current "In & Out," Speedway's Save Yourself finally debuts on the albums list, entering at No. 3. It's a well-made album composed of agreeable and singable pop-rock, much in the vein of a less-punkish Avril Lavigne and a more rock-y Liz Phair. It could stick around for a while.
For the 6th week in row, Celine Dion tops the TrackList with "You And I," and I gotta say, I just love it. It is without a doubt her best single in years. However, it's deathgrip on the pole position seems to be loosening, and she could easily succumb to either Joss Stone (still No. 2 for a 4th week) or huge movers Switchfoot (bounding 31-3 this week) as early as next week. And that's about all I can think of to say. Later, people. ---Brandon "Jayson" Ulman
