AFTER SIX NON-CONSECUTIVE WEEKS IN the No. 2 slot, Avril Lavigne finally takes "Complicated" to the top, albeit by default. Kylie Minogue's "Love At First Sight" loses momentum, and drops 1-3, while Eve & Alicia Keys haven't yet GAINED enough momentum to overpower the little Canadian with "Gangsta Lovin'" - which settles for second. In a week with no real movement to speak of, Lavigne also scores news by having her second single from Let Go, "Sk8er Boi," blast ahead 23-18. Aimee Mann's "Humpty Dumpty" and The Goo Goo Dolls' "Big Machine" both also climb five places, to No's 14 and 15, respectively. In order to top her previous best, Mann must reach beyond #7, which was logged by both "Save Me" in 2000 and "Red Vines" in 2001. The Goo Goo Dolls can breathe a sigh of relief (or could, if they cared), because they've already received their first J-SKWD #1, earlier this year, with "Here Is Gone." "Iris," from 1998's City Of Angels soundtrack, was their previous high-peaker, spending several weeks at #3 that summer.

ALLISON MOORER FANS WERE PROBABLY quite excited when they found out about the quiet release of her third album, Miss Fortune, on August 6. However, those who bought it were also probably just a little disappointed to discover that it fails to meet the amazing standards set by her 2000 masterpiece, The Hardest Part. Nonetheless, the new album is still a great - if flawed - work, and has thus far spun into the Top 40 with "Cold In California," which rests at #34 this week. Though a slow starter, it still has plenty of time to become her biggest J-SKWD hit. Her "Send Down An Angel" reached #10 in late 2000, while "Think It Over" ascended to #12 in 2001 - and spent 21 long weeks on the list.

LASTLY, MTV ACTUALLY PUT ON a good VMA show this year, and the airing benefits two of its great performers, Pink (up to 4 from 6) and Bruce Springsteen (#16, who regains his bullet and puts a sudden stop to his formerly speedy decline).
