9/18/2000- BBMak Concert Preview

by Jeannie Hernandez

The members of the British trio BBMak don’t need a flashing spectacle of lights and delirious effects to gain fans. They are wholesome in their attire and becoming in their appearance; they are an authentic boy band and have the talent to back up that title. With these attributes alone, their hit song “Back Here” has enchanted American music fans with its love sick melodies. Tomorrow at 6:30 PM, the boys will be gracing our remote corner of the Earth with their presence at the Kern County Fair.

The band has been touring with Britney Spears throughout the summer, but according to lead-guitarist Steven “Ste” McNally, 22, fans will be disappointed if they expect something that is even faintly similar to Spears’ colorful act.

“There won’t be any fancy costumes and dancing,” he said through a heavy English accent. “We’ll just be on stage doing what we love to do—playing our music.”

“Just expect a lot of fun for everyone!” exclaimed singer and guitarist Christian Burns, 26, whose touring experience has lead him to an accurate conclusion about American crowds in comparison to their worldwide counterparts.

“In Asia the crowds are reserved, but here in America the fans like to party.”

Sticking with such a tight and stressful touring schedule hasn’t taken its toll on the band members, however, and they credit the results of their hard work for their positive attitudes.

“We’ve been getting up in the wee hours of the morning for tour rehearsals,” said lead singer Mark Barry, 21, who plays the flute and bagpipes. “But the fans make all the work well worth it.”

The fruits of their labor have been evident all over the world—they’ve not only topped the charts in their native England, but all over Asia as well, and are already well on their way to #1 in the US. They’ll be starting their own headlining tour on October 23rd and will travel to every niche of America in the hopes of capturing the hearts of prospective fans.

The members, however, never expected that they would one-day be a part of such fame and notoriety. When they initially formed BBMak their intentions were very different, and they were caught off guard when every English record company attended a gig they held in Liverpool.

“We only dreamed of being famous,” says McNally, who, along with Burns and Barry, had trekked to the front doorsteps of record companies, playing their music in the hopes to attain that dream. “We wanted to play music, and it’s great to know that so many people appreciate what we’re doing now.”

“I wanted to be a fireman,” says Barry, who had an alternative plan if the avenue of entertainment didn’t pay off. “I had gone to training and everything. Hopefully we’ll still be making music in five years, because I love that more than anything!”

All-in-all, one should expect to have a great experience from attending the concert tomorrow. This dynamic trio has a lot in store for their fans.

“Come on out and have a good time!” said Burns.
