Of Mice And Men Essay

To start out I think that almost everybody in the movie was a victim of the depression, besides the man who owned the ranch. Everybody had a part that was as equally as brutal as the next persons.

Lenny was by far the most victimized person in the movie. He was handicapped so it made it even harder for him to get a job, to get to know people, and to live in general. He was made fun of where ever he went. People only respected him if they saw how strong he was and how he really was, a curious little boy.

The women of the depression also had it hard. There husbands were always working trying to get them money. They were cooped up inside the house all day and then expected to live normally with out some normal human contact. Curly's wife was a prime example. At the beginning of the movie I thought she was a sleazy women but by the end I felt sorry for and the way she had to die, getting attention from a handicapped man.

Men like George were treated like slave labor and they came a dime a dozen. If you needed a hired hand you only had to walk to the unemployment office and you could pick and choose what man you wanted. It made men victims and thus plunging the economy even farther down. Every man was making money and they didn't spend a dime of it.

Candy was old and therefore was regarded only as a good chicken feeder and he was taunted and made fun of because his dog was old and smelt. He was trying to hold on to the good old days when everything was better and he couldn't let the past go. It seemed that when the dog was shot a part of the lively Candy died but then when George and Lenny talked about there home that they were going to get Candy brightened up probably because he sensed that something good was going to happen and he wanted away from the bad places where he was living.

The man who owned the ranch was also victimized by the depression. He was a cut above the rest and he was looked upon as "better" and guys with little or no money don't like that so I bet he was taunted a lot by men who didn't work for him and by his peers for being so rich and so full of him self.

The Depression created many victims and most everybody could fit themselves into a place where they were a victim. It was a depressing time but many people lived through it and survived and lived to tell the tale of long ago when dirt, hence the "Dirty Thirties", was every where.
