vok/orators (split cdr from yuffie's sub quest recordings)
i am completely messed up, due to a lack of sleep. but here goes: the first seven songs by vok [excluding their version of 'ring dem bells'] are nasty and abrasive and disturbing [on their page they said it represented the lighter side of vok, but it seems like its only light in terms of their choice of source material on their first and last songs]. their side opens with a version of 'in the mood' that sounds like its playing on a turntable with the volume turned all the way up, with white noise bursts and stereophonic turns. 'moment8' is a great pulsing monster, bright shiny metallic sounds and more [but not as good, in my opinion, as the excellent 'moment5' on their mp3.com site]. also has four 'pulp' reworkings of various sets of tracks from the 1-99 cd, basically new tracks made from the old. i could recognize some elements of the originals, mostly on 'vok15-18pulp.' the orators side starts with 'pak180' which is a weird sped up drum[?] and vocal[?] loop with harsh distorted vocal noise bursts. i slowed down the main loop on my computer and still couldn't figure out what it was. next is my favorite of the disc, the ambient-noise 'headache,' loops and various sounds for a short five minutes. most of the orators tracks are loop-based explorations, with a couple nasty noise pieces, both represented [respectively] by the final tracks 'mood2' and 'doom2,' the first sounding like garbled transmission from a slow tranquil pass over the moon's surface and the second the same ship under attack by aliens, astronauts screaming. nice. note: the packaging for this cd was done by brabomb, another project of andy's [the orators/ysq/yuffie guy] and everybody's is different, hand painted with something weird glued or taped to the front. mine had a special guest appearance by the teenage mutant ninja turtles, and some others have apparently had calculator parts, as well as other stuff. no rotting animal bits, thank gawd.
