the slum pianos foundation the quick and dirty ep (self released cdr)
this disc opens with the menacing 'water ditch', low tones and random crunching, a nice way to start. i'm not so hot about the next track 'aunty 5', which is just a looped drum beat and and swirling high frequency tone for a bit over a minute, but at least it's short. 'dinner conversation' does it's best to make up for it with a moody synth pad and indecipherable, bit-reduced vocals looping each other and gradually getting more and more wavery and odd, pretty simple but it works well to set a mood. 'sod damn' is the closest you'll get to harsh noise on this disc, loud tones and buzzing chirping away like a dying modem for about a minute and a half, not too bad although a bit anticlimactic. 'submergedmetalscrape' is about what the name says, dense rumbling and bright metallic ringing, churning and droning noise. the last real track, 'pace' is probably my favorite, glitchy sine tones and a looped drone that sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie fight scene, when i listen to it i can picture guys in mad max gear squaring off in a junkyard or something. there's a bonus track of random drum sounds after a bit of silence that seems really out of place on this, although i suppose there was 'aunty 5'... however all in all this ep shows a lot of promise for being the artist's first release and i look forward to hearing more in the future.
