prurient white plains leather : black river falls (c20 from hospital productions)
this release from prurient incorporates sampled music as well as understandable lyrics, things which i haven't heard from him before (although i don't claim to have heard
everything). side one is a cut up of feedback, atmospheric street sounds, even a bit of piano, plus vocals that sound as thought they were barked through a wall of static, like an impatient teacher through a detuned radio. i've thought about the lyrics a lot since i first listened to it in anticipation of writing this review (a lyrics sheet is include with the tape, which is packaged in an oversized plastic slipcase, so i guess he doesn't want you to miss what he's saying), but i've decided not to bias anyone interested in this release with my interpretation (which is most likely skewed/incorrect anyway). so on to side two. 'black river falls' opens with some buzzing, chirping feedback and an opera sample devouring itself, followed by some unintelligible vocals, much more distorted than on the other side, although the lyrics are apparently taken from a song called 'on the rebound' by chuck sullivan (not familiar with that one). in spots they are fairly screamed though a squelching distortion that sounds as though it's coming right from his own throat. vocals are cut up with metal friction and feedback, ending with shifting feedback and distorted piano. to conclude: i'm not sure if i've said this before, if not it should be said and if i have, well, why not say it again? prurient has two things in his recordings that are lacking from most noise: emotion and meaning, and this short release is no exception.
