praying gods pregnant (cdr from bankruptcy audiocide)
"uh-oh, here comes trouble". this is the sample that kicks off the opening track from
pregnant, 'the first days', and it's like it was put there just for reviewers like myself to start out poorly written reviews. it's just too perfect to pass up, though. the gods are once again praying to the altar of digital, sample-rich noise the likes of which you only really seem to find on praying gods cds. occasionally the sounds are even pleasing to the ear, such as the time-stretched, layered door creaks that end out 'green plated', or the swirl of samples that open 'vanity' which are then stripped down to a few bare layers of sped up guitar jangle. and sometimes those gods seem to be out to confuse us puny mortals with tracks like 'tear jerker', an incredibly annoying loop of people crying over some weird music, which distorts into a static mess, slows down, collapses on itself and then gets even more annoying just when you think it's over. and then does it again, descending into a stuttering timestretch chaos. 'floating high meadowlands' has an interesting sample beaten into submission 'ramasamadhi'-sk-1-style, and the final track 'angels on the head of a pin' opens with a sample very similar to 'ramasamadhi', which degenerates into harsh fluttering noise. as a whole the album flows together very nicely, and if you've ever liked anything by the praying gods you'll probably like this. i did.
now finally, allow me to key you in on a little secret: e victor c, the supposed recorder of the prayers of gods, is actually former kid in the hall dave foley! think about it -they're both canadian, and you never see them in the same place together, and the praying gods recordings incorporate odd, humorous elements. pretty suspect, eh?
